Replaced lamp on samsung dlp - will not turn on - color wheel is intact but will not move - it sounds like TV is trying to start up but after three tries all three LEDs turn on - is this possibly a bad ballast?

  • lruffolo Jun 22, 2011

samsung swears that it is the lamp - but i have replaced it twice - seems like ballast is fine since it tries to start. is it possible for color wheel to be bad even though it is intact - nothing wrong with TV just went black last week and has not turned back on since.

No,the tv colors wheel it is also dead or lose connections somewhere, because there no movement at all and all the LEDS indication lights are flashing and not giving power voltage to the tv colors wheel part at all.

Samsung HLT6187SAX/XAA trys to start up but never does then quits trying after three times. All three LED lights in front begin to flash.

Two common things to look at:

Look at turn on from rear where lamp should be to see if it comes on even for a few moments. If it does not come on open lamp door and release the two screws and grasp the handle and pull the lamp cartridge out===look to see if bulb shattered inside.

With it out look (may need a makeup or small mirror) where it faces, the color wheel is there, look to see wheel intact with no missing pieces or not itself shattered---usually a bad wheel (but not always) will make a high pitched fan like sound or even a grinding sound.

The lamp is in a pull out cartridge or box----here is a photo of what the wheel will look like----both lamp and wheel were high failure parts.

Samsung dlp tv will power on then shortly after I have three lights flashing and it shuts off with lights still flashing, this happened back in april, I replaced the bulb and now its doing it again....

This is a suggestion and not a solution to your problem.

I would watch from the side or rear while someone tries to turn the set on: Does the lamp light even for a few seconds?

Second: I would also with set unplugged remove lamp cartridge and look at the color wheel: is it intact and not shattered?

The color wheel can make a high pitched or fan like sounds before it fails.

If after you examine the color wheel you find pieces are gone etc it is your problem and not the lamp; it faces the lamp and if you look carefully you should be able to see if it is intact; I attach a photo of it for you.

Before you rate this information let me know what you find or if you have questions.

Samsung hln617w dlp tv won't turn on. Red temp

Had similar problem. Thought it was the lamp. Examined old lamp but it appeared to be good. Ordered a new one anyway. Changed the lamp but the TV screen would not come on. It would make the usual noise as it was going to come on normally but it would cycle 3 times & then turn off. The LED lights in the front panel would indicate a defective lamp. Then read about the ballast. Changed the ballast & still same problem. Tried starting the TV without the lamp installed & noticed that the color wheel did not spin. Removed old color wheel & discovered it was broken. This appears to be the cause of all of my problems. I wish I new earlier of the test-turn on the TV without the lamp being installed & check to see if the color wheel is spinning. Would have save money on the lamp & ballast.

I own a Samsung HL-R5067W 50'' DLP. Set is about 3 years old. Recently I heard a loud pop while viewing, picture distorted, but never went blank. I turned set off. When turned on again a loud whining noise...

Check your color wheel. There is a DIY guide for replacing the color wheel. Mine did the same thing yours is and my color wheel was all busted up. Unfortunately after replacing the color wheel my set continues to do the same thing, but this could mean I need to replace the ballast as well.

Samsung DLP HLM-617W/XAA

with lamp out (door closed) the ballast should "strike" or give an arc sound, trying to fire the lamp. If it does not do that maybe the color wheel is not spinning up - has to do that first.........then the set will try to fire the lamp

It is unlikely that you can do anything yourself.
It sounds to me that there is a power supply problem that has steadily gotten worse and that cannot be confirmed remotely, it must be done on site by an equipped professional.

Samsung HLS4266W 43" dlp

Power issues (Tv not turning on) were typically due to faulty ballast. While the TV reports a bad lamp it is the ballast itself causing the issue. Samsung is well aware and will replace both the ballast and the lamp (since the lamp can be prematurely aged but the bad ballast). After replacment most people stop having issues.
