On my emerson microwave model mw81195b, with the door closed on the unit cycled out a fan is still running. The only way to cycle the unit off is to open the door. The microwave functions fine except for this. I am a service technician for ac, elec and many appliances but not very experienced with microwaves but have some minor experience. thanks for your help in advance

I'm fairly sure the fan has a door switch and that may have failed. if you take the outer cover off the micro wave itself you hopefully will have a wiring diagram of the unit. Many times I have had to replace micro wave door switch's that have failed not letting it start or sometimes such as yours something like the light staying on. Being that you are a service man, I don't have to tell you be sure to disconnect the power to it and then you can use your ohm meter to check the switches. Hope this helps you

First thing that came to my mind, the door switch

  • rajanshyam Oct 24, 2018

Everyone has given the right solution , may be a cowboy attempting repairs before you has intentionally shorted the fan switch , because in my experience these leaf switches rarely short , but most often go open

It does sound like a microswitch problem for sure but most of the time the microswitch doesn't go bad or stick, it's the plastic door latch itself that engages the microswitch that actually wears out, the plastic just wears down a little. It's always a good idea to put a small amount of food grade silicone on the latch to keep the wear to a minimum. That mechanism, including the springs, is in the door itself. You have to take the choke off to get to it (the choke is the rectangular piece of plastic that conceals the door latches). You won't get this off without breaking it (at least i never have) so just order a new one if you order the new door latch kit. Still double check to make sure the microswitches aren't sticking before you start ordering parts.

SOURCE: Emerson microwave Glass turntable replacement

The part number was shown as M0S0885 (or MOS0885) but it is listed as "no longer available". In some cases, two microwave-safe plates can serve as a makeshift replacement for a missing tray. You have to find a saucer that fits securely on your turntable support, though. I've attached a photo. One last option would be a Nordicware or Rubbermaid or similar wind-up carousel. Wal-Mart had them when I checked a few months ago, and you can find them on Google's Froogle site at http://froogle.google.com by searching for the key words: wind-up turntable.

SOURCE: Microwave runs with door open

I would say you have a failing door switch or the mount which holds your door switch is loose or broken. In most designs, it is the upper door switch that will produce these very symptoms when it is intermittent or its mount is broken or loose. Opening the door while cooking (without first hitting the STOP pad) is the primary cause of door switch failure. Slamming the door, damage during shipping or transportation and sloppy manufacturing techniques or materials are the primary causes of trouble with the door switch mounts. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

How do I get my emerson microwave to turn off after the timer is finished?

There are a couple of microwave ovens out there where after it has finished cooking, the light and fan continue to run until you open the door. Then the fans shuts off, but the light remains on. When you close the door, then the light shuts off. If the light and fan go back on when you close the door, then you have a bad door switch.

Fan continuously runs, have to leave door open

Check the door switches with digital meter, usually find one bad one. Set meter to ohms and test, some will be normally open and others closed, check with the door open and closed.

Emerson Microwave MW8115SS --

I would suggest you check the door switches inside the microwave oven just below the keypad, rectangular in shape. The switches are normally open or closed, set meter to ohms, unhook lead from one side and test with door open and closed. If readings are the same both ways the switch is defective. "check all switches"

Emerson Model MW9325SL microwave oven looses power

It sounds like either a filter is clogged, an air vent in the back is blocked, or the internal cooling fan is not running.

We have a sound clip here of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.

This overheating can happen if you put it in a cabinet or push it against a wall.

Many Emerson microwave owner's manuals are available for free download here.

Even though yours may not be there, there might be one close enough to help you.

Model R-1460, when I shut the door it runs but doesn't heat up. What needs to be done to fix it?

Do you mean that when you close the door, the fan comes on? If so, it sounds like a bad door switch. Probably the secondary interlock switch.
This failure is caused by opening the door when the unit is in cook mode. On ALL microwaves, not just one or two brands.......
Be sure to push the stop button before opening the door to add or stir... Or wait for the cook cycle to end. (This is why microwaves have a two step function on the stop/clear button. Hit stop once to stop cook mode and twice to reset timer).
You should use an ohm meter to check all 3 switches. The switch can be either stuck 'closed' or physically closed but not 'making' electrically.

MW8119SB cooks when door is closed regardless of settings

Clear the cook cycle when you remove the food. Some microwaves pick up where they left off, so you don't have to keep pressing buttons.

Turntable won't stop

Sounds like a door switch problem or stuck relay contacts on the control PCB. Do the light and fan run too or just the T/T??
