In your unit the default map is embedded in the operating system / firmware - its files aren't accessible thru the USB connection, which gives access only to the files on the SD card. If the map is still missing after the update then the defect is hardware - the memory chip that stores the map is defective. This is unfixable since the cost of the repair would be higher than for a whole new unit.
Your only hope to make it work is to get a new map from here
http://www.navigon.com/portal/int/karten_services/freshmaps.html
load it in
a new 2GB SD card that will be used for it and only it and then configure the unit to use it: Option, Settings, Current Map.
Yes, that is the default map - you shouldn't be able to access it, it should be hidden and only the remaining free space should be accessible to you. Since you can access it and the Menu settings are inaccessible then the chip that stores the firmware is indeed damaged and the firmware (even the brand new one) has been corrupted. The only thing you can do is to take out the SD card, press the Reset button and immediately after reboot try to enter in the Menu. If even this fails it is indeed a hardware fault and the unit is effectively dead.
If the firmware has been instantly corrupted the moment you updated it then clearly the defect is hardware - the memory chip inside your unit is defective. No, you can't modify the boot file - the setting for the map is in the registry of the Windows CE that is used as OS in your unit and it's not accessible in any way. You already have the latest firmware available - you could try to reinstall it but i don't think it will do any good. No, there is no way to format it and start fresh. But you have nothing to lose on trying - just wipe everything then format it : make sure to use the exact same one, find it from the D > Properties

Thanks for your response, however whats interesting is when I plug the unit into the PC I get access to the unit's internal storage (drive letter D -2GB) and if I have an SD card plugged in, another drive letter E also 2GB. In drive D there are a number of folders (MN6, POI) and files there, including the "USA 48 Contiguous States.map" (1.5GB) from 3/7/2008. Are you saying that this not the default map?
Also, If I loaded the map onto the SD Card, how do I tell the unit to use the SD card if I can't access the menu settings (grey out).
I don't believe the unit is defective. only that a boot file has become corrupted -because I was able to update the software through Navigon Fresh with no errors.
Thanks
Well, as I said earlier. The menu is not accessible at all during boot up. A reset does not do anything other than shut down the device. The device connects correctly with Navigon Fresh(NF) and I was able to update it to the latest software. I am also able to access other areas of the device through NF, like maps installed and versions etc. One thing that will not complete successfully is a backup through NF. Do you still believe that the firmware is bad (even though I can access it)? Perhaps I am missing a particular file(or a particular file is corrupted) that tells the device where or what the map is to load? Can I modify a boot up file to tell the Navigon to use the map on the SD card instead, since I can't access the menu? What If I try and update the software through NF again? Is there anyway to delete something on the device so that NF will reload everything back on to it or the SD card. Thanks
