You should be able to by going to my computer, then right clicking your USB device and either FORMAT or go to properties and on the tabs select tools and error check. You may have the possibility to Format there as well. If that fails I suggest downloading a separate program in linux, such as Hirens Pack...They have Hard Drive/Memory specific program applications + plenty of DOS applications at your fingertips for just about everything else...just be very careful which ones you choose to mess with. Only for advanced users. Hope this helps

If the operating system can't format the hard drive then the chances are that the drive is either failing or Failed.

This is what happens: the memory chip inside the card has failed and the file system on it is corrupted; this corruption is detected by Windows that asks you to format the card to fix the file system; the format fails because the chip is defective and cannot be properly written.
This cannot be fixed, the card is dead. Junk it and buy a new one.

format it in your friend's computer.

sometimes there are sd card errors make you format failed. you may get messages like

"Unsupported media card inserted, format now?" error in your smart phone,
"Media is not formatted would you like to format now?" error,

... ...

you need to fix sd memory card errors first and them format you sd card.

if it is a hard drive...the drive could be/have:
data or power cable may not be seated properly or failing
the jumper may not be set correctly
not initialized yet
not formatted yet
or could be failing itself

if it is a cd/dvd drive.. the drive could be/have
data or power cable may not be seated properly or failing
the jumper may not be set correctly
the disk may not be in a suppoted format (ex. using a dvd in cd rom drive)
the disk may be scratched or damaged
the lens may be dirty or not properly aligned
firmware maybe outdated.

if drive is a removable drive/flash drive the drive may be:
not powered
data cable not connected/failing
the usb/firewire port may be failing.
not initialized
not formatted
failing in itself.

Try formatting the memory card via a card reader connected to your PC. Use FAT32.

Hi I think its a compatibility issue. Try formatting it using your camera. else format it using Windows.
