I have a 10 year old side by side refrigerator. Model No. ED20TKXDN01., Ser. SG0437491. The freezer portion works fine, plenty of cold air. The refrigerator portion is not staying cold, food is spoiling. Vents in the frig are not clogged, but no air coming out of top vent.

I have cleaned the coils this morning, but the refrigerator section does not appear to cool. The freezer seems fine. This is model eti18PKXGWI ser no. 042 9086 eemingly c. 10 years old.

Your freezer fan has probably quit. On most refrigerators the freezer is the only compartment actually cooled by the compressor and coils. The refrigerator compartment is feed cold air from the freezer compartment by way of a small fan. If you have you refrigerator turned all the way up and the door open you should here the fan running and be able to feel air moving somewere in the refrigerator compartment.

My refrigerator wont get cold and it is on the highest temperature possible the freezer is working fine. its still makeing ice but its just that the refrigerator wont get cold. its also 10 years old.

Always set the controls to their "normal" recommended setting. Changing them will not work. Is there air blowing from the freezer? The freezer fan may not be working. Or if it is, possibly the air flapper could be stuck closed not letting air flow into the refrigerator.

Freezer is cold but not keeping icecream frozen.

If, the fresh food section is 34- 38 degrees, then the freezer should be cold enough to keep ice cream solid. All of the cooling capability comes from the freezer section. I, personally, would not waste time or money on a ten year old box. Ten years ago it cost $1000, so, the outlay is $100 per year. Dump the old refrigerator and get a new one.

Refrigerator not cold/Freezer cold.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp .

.
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

All of a sudden stopped getting cold in the fridge portion, freezer is fine

If you completely defrost the freezer and restart the unit and it doesn't get cold in the refrig portion it could be the internal fan that moves cold air from the freezer to the frig area if it does get cold after an hour or so then it is probably the defrost coil needs replacing. I am not familar with your exact model but this senario applies to many different units.

Whirlpool side by side refrigerator not cooling

yes do the check for the baffle. set the controoler for the thermostat to off and the freezer to the coldest setting while have the doors open. take the cover off the baffle and observe if its closed . should close in 10 seconds, also the compressor should be on, as should the evaporator fan and the condenser fan. turn the controls the oposite and the baffle should open. Also make sure that you have seperation of product so that you haev adequate air flow in frig.

Refrigerator not working

Hello dooz127,
You have a coolant leak some where.

How old is your fridge?

huuum,happy to assist you!

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.
