The 'FAT' file-system uses 16-bit arithmetic, and thus is limited to about 2GB in size.
The 'FAT32' file-system uses 32-bit arithmetic, and thus can easily format an 8GB device.
So, be sure to choose 'FAT32'.

Does the card show a 1.87GB "partition", plus 6.13GB of "unused" space?
If so, then delete that "small" partition, and then create a new partition that "spans" the entire 8GB.
Then, FORMAT that partition.
Copy your files off the card. Then Format the card and select FAT32 file system. After the format is done try the card again and see if you can copy more files to it.
hey i had this issue too.... but myne was a little different on a 64MB card it showed 33GB but it was a virus..!!
what i did was i plugged it on a mac and formatted it and came back to life a a new drive !! I think this helped !! if no mac then try the dos !!
eg: like this : Your Driver Letter=G: take run type cmd in the dos window type " Format G: /X /FS:fat32 then type the current name of the volume(NAME or try Removable Disc) and press ENTER after the format type EXIT and there u have ur drive back !!
