Hello, Thank You for using FixYa. I will be helping you today. You dont use the spring tool when replacing the thrust bearing. Only when removing the brake. It can be hard to get on but no special tool needed.
Thank You and please rate my answer if it was helpful..
I worked for Maytag for Twelve Years and never had a tool or was aware of a tool someone may have come up with but there is no factory tool. You cant get the tip of a flat head screwdriver in the groove and pull the shaft down enough to slide the clip on with chanel locks or needle nose pliers?
can you get just the clip by itself on? If so put it on turn the pulley untill the brake compresses and release it. Remove the clip and see if you will have enough room to install a washer.

I was reading another post about replacing the thrust bearing, and he listed a picture of a tool that would fit between the spokes to allow the E-clip to slide in easier. That is what I am looking for.
another guy that posted on fixya showed a picture of a "claw" that he used to hook into the lip on the brake. I'll have to experiment, as I have tried with a screwdriver and came close. I agree there is no factory tool, but was looking for pictures of using the "claw"
I tried that twice, but I figured out the "claw" JW was refering to. I was able to get a small claw nail remover between the brake lip and the brake to compress it enough to install the clip. Getting the first load of needed laundry done now.
