In your case, there could be three possible reasons:

1). Accidentally hide your files.
Try to show them all like this: Start > Run > Type in "control folders" > View > "Show hidden files and folders"

2). Virus infection.
Some virus also would hide your files without warning and make you find them nowhere. So, run your antivirus tool to keep your hard drive clean.

3). Hard drive problem.
Some hard drive problems also would make your files inaccessible. So, in order to access these files again, you need data recovery software.

Try to restore these inaccessible files on this hard drive at the help of a drive data recovery freeware:

You hard drive may have failed, but if its still working you can recover the data with a program.

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23069-order,1/description.html

the program listed above is free and should be able to recover some of you data, some data will be lost forever though.

Fix pc hard drive

Did the drive crash? Is the computer not recognizing the drive? If so your files are gone unless you want to spend over a grand trying to get them retrieved.

If the computer recognizes the drive but you don't see your files, then a virus has just hidden the files. They are there and retrievable, just hidden.

External Harddrive stopped working / isn't recognized anymore by my computers.

If you're lucky, it's just your drive isn't receiving enough current to it (and therefore can't spin - thus those strange sounds) and if you're a bit less lucky it might be an electrical problem of the controller board of the enclosure. I don't imagine you have another power supply for the external enclosure on hand, and I doubt any warranty for your product would include data retrieval, so here's what you can do yourself; Unscrew the hard drive out of the external enclosure and try connecting it directly to your PC (you will need to know which end goes where, beyond that it's pretty straight forward and you need not be a computer wizard to test it - just make sure you don't fiddle with your PC's innards while it's plugged in and as a precautionary measure unplug he power cord off it before even opening it up). Follow up on this topic if you require any additional help with it. If you can manage, then once connected, plug you PC back to the el. grid, turn it on and see if the affected hard drive came back to life. Boot to your OS and make a backup of data you need to retrieve either on your other internal drive or alternatively burn it to recordable optical media. You will need another external enclosure for your drive after it and, may I suggest, you get an actively cooled one instead. If you're unlucky, it's the hard drive itself that's gone bad (in external enclosures it's most typically due to overheating and might be hard drive's PCB board that's burnt). That will require advanced servicing and might cost you an arm and a leg to get your data back, depending on where the problem lies. PCB can be exchanged for a working one also in a DIY fashion, however it requires a bit more know-how and I wouldn't suggest you do it on your own. If the motor gave, then servicing in a "clean room" environment is required and that might get darn expensive. Best of luck, though! Please tell us how it went either case ;)

Hard Drive Crash - wants to re-install how to retrieve data to laptop computer

If the HDD has failed you can't retrieve the data off the failed drive. You can send the HDD into a data recovery company and they will read the disk in the drive and put the info on DVD and sent it to you, but that is the only way. The service is quite expensive. Just do a google search for failed hard drive data recovery.

L've always used my built in hard drive to save

it sounds like the harddrive has gone bad. You can always use a USB stick for a temp solution and try to clean the hard drive and see if you can transfer data over. There are also program and transfer cables for when you upgrade to a bigger hard drive. You may want to see if you can can try to pull some data from the old hard drive that way.

My hard drive is suddenly undetectable by mac. when i plugged it in windows, it said "the drive is not formatted" how do i retrieve my files?

Hi,

The Mac and the windows file system are different. So if you will connect a Mac file system formatted hard drive to a windows system then it may occur. To retrieve your data from your MAC hard drive you have to connect the drive to a Mac system.

Check the cables of the hard drive or replace them. You can try to connect with another port of the mother board. If the Bios don't detect your hard drive then check the bios settings. If the bios detects your hard drive but you can't access it then try to repair the OS to retrieve your data.

External WD 1TB. I cannot retrieve my files it says Parameter is incorrect when that is gone It shows there are no files on my HD and there are plenty of files all psd files as well

I'm sorry to say that this may be due to a corrupt HDD. WD Hard drives tend to die far too fast (I know too well unfortunately).
If this is under warranty, I would call up WD support service for a free replacement.
If you want to take more invasive steps, I will be happy to help you try and recover your files.

You maybe able to retrieve data from this hard drive by connecting it to an USB hard drive adapter. Then plug this adapter into a working computer's USB port. If the hard drive is OK then this computer will see the adapter as an external hard drive and you can open the folders and files and copy them to the computer's hard drive or to a USB flash drive.
