Paper Jam - ADF

When trying to fax the first sheet jams just on the wrap around; it will not feed trough the ADF. I cannot see what is causing the jam. Thanks for your help.

  • Anonymous Aug 25, 2008

When I try to fax, the paper feeds halfway through and then jams. I can't see any problem other that maybe the rollers are not actually close enough together to catch the paper as it feeds through, but I don't know how to adjust them.

I have a message on screen sayng " ADF Jam" there is no paper jamming the system. I cannot make this message go away, and so i cnnot use any other function of the printer. How might I clear...

Hi travlynn2,

  1. The ADF
unit is the grey paper tray located on the top of the scanner unit.
Check the following points if it does not feed paper, or you receive an "ADF jam" error message:

  2. Check the position of the ADF document guide:

    1. Lift up the ADF unit. Locate the document guide on the underside, as shown here:

    2. The document guide should be tucked in behind the grey plastic casing, but a paper jam can push it out of position. Figure 8 below shows the correct (1) and incorrect (2) positions:

    3. If your document guide looks like example (2)
on the right, lift it out on the right-hand side. Tuck it in behind the
grey section, so that it matches the example on the left (1).

    1. Close the scanner unit.

    2. If the printer is displaying "ADF Jam, press start to continue", press the B/W Start button to clear the error:

    3. Test the printer by scanning or faxing via the ADF unit.

  3. Check the ADF edge guides:

    1. The adjustable paper tray edge guides must be set to the correct paper size for the paper you are loading. Otherwise, the paper may skew, misfeed and/or jam.

    2. Slide the edge guides to enclose the loaded
paper (in the direction of the yellow arrows below), without causing it
to bunch or crease. The paper should be aligned with the relevant paper size marker:

Figure 9. The ADF edge guides.

  4. Check the ADF unit feed rollers:

    1. Open the cover of the ADF by pulling up the grey lip, as shown below:

    2. Check thoroughly for fragments of paper and foreign objects. Take care not to tear any jammed paper when you remove it.

    3. Use the green gear (circled in yellow below) to turn the paper feed rollers and feed through jammed paper:

    4. Paper dust or foreign material on the rollers may cause paper to misfeed. Clean these parts with a damp, well-wrung cloth:

      1. The upper paper pickup rollers (circled in red, above top left). You can turn these by hand.

      2. The lower paper pickup rollers. These will rotate as you turn the green gear (circled in yellow above). See the inset for a close-up of the lower rollers.

    5. When complete, close all the covers.

    6. If the printer is displaying "ADF Jam, press start to continue", press the B/W Start button to clear the error:

    7. Test the printer by scanning or faxing via the ADF unit.

  5. Check that the ADF unit sensors are not obstructed.

    1. Open the cover of the ADF unit.

    2. Look at Figure 12 below. Check the position of the black plastic parts (the actuators) circled in red.

    3. If the black plastic actuators do not stick out from the ADF cover, they may have been pushed out of position by a paper misfeed and be obscuring the ADF sensors. Tap the back of the ADF unit firmly to release the actuators.

    4. When complete, close all the covers. Check and test the printer as explained in Step 6.d.vi.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Brother MFC-8860DN All-In-One Laser Printer showing document jam error

Doc jam error usually means a jam in the adf (auto doc feed) when feeding a fax or doc to copy.

The most common reason brother mfc,s of this configuration have doc feed issues is believe it or not the hinge that operates the lid/adf, specifically the left side one (looking from the front). Inside the hinge there are two springs exerting tremendous force on the hinge (that enables the lid to stay up by itself) however this force eventually slowly breaks the fulcrum point of the hinge which leads to the lid not closing properly which means a sensor under the lid does not activate properly resulting in the adf stopping and resulting in the machine registering a jam. the difference between the sensor activating or not can be as little as a millimeter and is not often disernable. the hinge needs replacing by a techo.

the other reason could be you just have dirty adf feed rollers, clean them with a cotton rag dipped in metho, open the adf lid and give the rollers a scrub. the rollers should have 'tread' on them similar to a tyre, if not they are worn and need replacing.

One other possibility is there may be a paper fragment left over from a jam removal still caught in the paper path and activating a sensor activator that tells the machine paper is coming or going. most commonly in the section where the paper is looping on its return journey back out of the adf, open the adf lid, have a look with a torch and see how you go.

Regards, Andrew.

Cant send nor receive faxes

dear sir, kindly follow the below instructions
Instructions
  1. Ensure that all cables are securely connected. First, make sure that the printer cable connecting your computer to your printer is connected securely. Then, make sure that the power cord is inserted into a wall outlet. Try your print job again after you have ensured that all cables are properly connected.

  2. Clear a paper jam if your printer is not responding or you are receiving a "Paper Jam" error message on your printer. To clear a jam, first open the rear output door by pushing down on the two levers on each side of the door. Opening the rear door simply makes it easier to clear a jam. Open the top cover on the front of the printer by pressing the release button on the right side of the printer. Locate the paper jam and use two hands to gently remove the paper jam. Try your print, scan, fax or copy job again.

  3. Clear stored or saved faxes if you are having trouble sending or receiving faxes. Old faxes may be stuck in the fax queue, which may be causing the printer to not respond. To remove stored faxes, press the "Menu" button on the printer and select "Fax Functions." Then select "Clear Saved Faxes." Wait for the queue to clear and try your fax job again.

  4. Remove paper from the automatic document feeder (ADF) input tray if your scan job is coming out crooked. The ADF input tray can only hold up to 50 sheets at a time. If there are more than 50 sheets in the input tray, the output may appear skewed. Try your scan job again after removing the paper.

  5. Adjust your computer monitor's display settings if your scanned image is not an accurate representation of the original image. This can be done in the "Control Panel" in Windows. Set the settings to the highest possible resolution and try your scan job again.

  6. Perform a power cycle on your printer if the previous steps were unsuccessful. To do this, turn off your printer, then unplug it from the wall. Wait a few minutes and plug the printer back in. Try your print, scan, fax or copy job again.

take care..thank you

When trying to fax I get an error "open adf cover"...

You should be able to. It sounds like you've got a paper jam in the document feeder. Chances are there was a jam and part of the document (a small peice perhaps) is still lodged in the document feeder unit.

Sir, can anyone help me with my fax (canon fax l295)for a problem, it was always indicating that "load paper" even though i put paper on the tray once it was start feeding it makes an paper jam error and...

You either have a paper path blockage or your feed rollers are worn. You'll need to take it apart to check though. Try removing paper, turning machine off and on and re-inserting paper. Remember to fan (separate) paper before loading, it could be static causing the sheets to stick together and jam in the machine.
