Western Digital My Book Essential WDBAAF5000EBK - hard drive - 500 GB - Hi-Speed USB USB 2.0 Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jun 13, 2011

Hi, I have a WD external HD (my book essential) that doesnt seems to be read by any of the pcs I've tried to plug it on. It doesnt make a sound or even blinks that blues light. I tried to change cables, but no result. Any solutions?

  • Anonymous Jun 13, 2011

Yes, I do have a separate AC power. The external was working perfectly until 2 days ago.

I followed your advice and tried other adapters (same voltage), but i got nothing. Better start looking for that warrantee, right? Thanks a lot for your help!

This unit requires separate AC power. If the blue light is not on to begin with - indicating power, no PC will be able to read the USB. There is a hard disc in the unit that needs to spin...it is not solid state like a thumb drive.

Ok. Verify the adapter...do you have another with the same voltage? As a test only. You must test this first. After that you may have to take unit apart or take it in for servicing if still under warrantee. Power must get to the drive. If you had a brownout, it is possible it got fried, or the adapter wire has severed. Internally, the power connect leads may have come loose from the hard disc. Not likely though as I believe they glue them on with hot white glue.

sorry about this....hopefully it is under warrantee.

"the parameter is not correct" msg re WD My Book, unable to access

Try plugging it into a different computer to see what it does. Sometimes a computer's operating system will recognize an external drive differently if it has only a slight problem, whereas another computer's configuration may treat the problem differently. Some external hardrive software can get jumbled by the programs of a computer or sometimes even their own software programs can cause slight problems. It sounds like a software problem with bugs that can be ironed out. Also some computers will change the drive name to fit into the order of drives it recognizes. Good luck!

I've had my external hard drive My Book Essential for a while now and had no problems with it until now. I would usually plug it in and the pop up screens would ask what you would like to do like...

The fact that it displays a '0% used' indicator probably means that somehow the data that you have hitherto stored on your external hard drive has been erased. This might not necessarily be the case, so don't panic yet.

The first thing I would try doing is reinstalling any software that came with your WD My Book. Not many external HDDs require additional software to run properly, but if yours does, then I strongly recommend reinstalling that first. I would then try using Windows Disk Manager to see if your computer is recognizing the G: drive as a hard drive, because I have had to use disk manager when I've added additional internal hard drives to my computer. If neither of these work [or you could not find the CD your My Book came with] I would search around online for driver or software updates available for your device.

One thing that I noticed while typing my suggestion for you is that before you attempting using the back up feature on your My Book, the drive for the My Book was (G:) but after you attempted the back up process the drive is indicated as (H:). I think that what might have happened was that when you attempted backing up the My Book, it was partitioned into a storage section (G:) and a section in which the backup data is stored (H:). If you can find and access it, the (G:) drive is likely to still contain all the data that you previously assigned to it.

If this doesn't help, I apologize, but I sincerely hope that your problem will be resolved.

Just got a new WD HD (1Tb) and am trying to put a bunch of movies onto it, but the drive is 'read only.' i can't create new folders on it, or transfer anything onto it either. i'm on OSX at...

How was the drive formated? If it was formated as NTFS, OSX can only read - it won't write.

If you're going to be using it on your Mac, then you should repartition/reformat it in your disk utility. That way you will get better performance out of it.

I have WD My Book Essential 2 capacity 500 GB. Unfortunately everytime I connect it to the PC and power, does not show as a hard drive and has no driver. I backed up my files on it from the same computer...

you may have a bad drive, but first dose the drive power up not just light up can you hear the drive.
what you have in the box is just a nornal HD in an external box. you can if "absolutely nessesary " remove the HD and put it into your PC as a second drive.
but first you need to know if it is running and if the WD My Book power supple is working.
Have you tried using a different USB cable? a different power supply of the same Voltage & amps.

Western Digital MY BOOK 500gig - Drive does not appear

Check the driver letter assignement, and make sure there is no conflict on that (happened to me on my laptop as well).
I found out by reading this: www.devicedriverfinder.com/blog/device-errors/external-hard-drive-troubleshooting

Definitely don't format if not required, you can first try to restore the MBR.
