I have a Kenmore sewing machine Model 158, 1792280. The foot pedal is not working well; I was sewing normally and when I finished, I removed my foot from the foot pedal but the machine continue sewing. I stopped it by unplugging the cord that goes to the foot pedal; when I conected the cord again the machine started stitching even without me pushing down the pedal with my foot. You need to clean both parts of the sliding contacts before you oil. Just using oil doesn't work. Did he use Water Displacement Formula 40 (WD40)? It tends to get used for everything. Good for cleaning, though, and then sewing machine oil to lubricate.

Might the plug connecting the Pedal be plugged into the machine wrong. Possibly turn the plug 180-degrees and replug.

You can try www.sewingpartsonline.com and see if the universal one that they have listed for $12.95 will work. You have to take your foot pedal cord off and put it into the new one. But, if you call them I am sure they can help. They helped me out a few times on older machines. Or go to Sears and see if you can order one through them.

Since it was your grandmother's machine, it is very likely the machine has not been used in many years nor has it had any TLC. Most often, the machine will seize due to old oil that has dried out. Resist the temptation to try running the machine until the issue is addressed because the motor can be damaged. If this is the cause of the problem, you will need plenty of patience, good quality oil, possibly a handheld hairdryer, and good ol' elbow grease. But, at the end, you will have a well-functioning sewing machine.
