I purchased an older Singer Stylist zigzag model 457 sewing machine at a garage sale. It doesn't have the owners manual and the bottom thread gets all knotted up. It also is hard to feed the material thru. Is ther any way I can download an owners manual

I can definitely help you with the owners manual. Go to http://parts.singerco.com/IPinstManuals/457A_105_125_135_143A.pdf and you can download it direct from singer, no viruses, nothing. Just save it in Adobe format.

The bobbin thread problem is called a birds' nest and can be from a number of problems. First thing to do is to change your needle, especially if it was the one you bought the machine with. It may look perfectly straight to the naked eye. But it only needs to be a little bent to cause a problem. If this doesn't clear the problem up, make sure you're using a new bobbin, freshly wound. If the bobbin isn't wound properly or is an old bobbin that's slightly bent or not quite round, it'll cause problems, too. Finally, the machine may need a new bobbin casing. Do a google search for Singer sewing machine parts and search for a bobbin casing for a model 457. You'll remove the plate from the top of the machine CAREFULLY (the screws are small, so be careful not to lose them!). Take pictures if you need to with your cell phone so you can see what to do when you need to put the new casing in. Bobbin casings are usually $25-30. This is the last thing, and I would only do this if you see that thread is catching on something in the bobbin area when you're moving the wheel by hand.

I've tried to be clear on the last bit, but I realize it can be a little awkward. If you need any other help with that, please leave me a comment back. It goes straight to my email, so I'll see it quick and will get back to you right away. The manual doesn't help a lot with your bobbin problem, so I'll do whatever I can to help you through it and get you sewing. Good for you for finding a great garage sale find!

The dial is for the thread tension and depends on what you are sewing. Keep in the middle number to start with. Here is your owner manual.

I would like to find a singer stylist zigzag 413 manual -The machine I bought is not bringing up the bobbin thread

Singer has many of their manuals here: https://www.singer.com/support . The current link to the manual for the Stylist 413 is https://www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/SINGER%20413%20Stylist%20Sewing%20Machine.pdf .

Usually if the bobbin thread doesn't come up, check that the bobbin is inserted so that the thread comes off the bobbin counter-clockwise. Check that the thread is correctly is under the tension spring. Check the needle for damage. After that, you need to check the bobbin case and rotating hook to make sure there is no damage or timing problems.

I hope this helps.

I just bought a Singer Stylist 457.

if you bought the machine used, then it's possible that a
cam or gear is either worn or damaged. & needs to be check at a sewing machine shop.
if the machine is new,,then take the machine back to where you
bought it & tell them about the zigzag, even let them try it & see
what happens, I been sewing for over 30 years & I wouldn't keep
it,, if you bought it new,, I'd get another one

How do I replace the motor on a singer stylist 457?

What a great machine! All metal parts. If you're sure it's the motor, you will probably have to buy another for parts. There are several for sale on ebay right now. If you are not a professional repair person, you may want to consult one before spending the money.

Singer stylist 7258, will only pick up bobbin on one side when doing zigzag stitch

try using a washable stablizer or interfacing.
if that doesn't help then it's possible that a gear or cam may be worn enough to cause the machine zig zag not to work properly

Bobbit thread on my Singer Stylist 457 will not catch

Pull the slide plate open and watch the hook (the rotating part under the bobbin case). It should move around with no hitch.

If it does not turn, it has a broken gear. The model 457 has a vertical shaft gear that breaks and it's easy to replace.
