When I push the copy button on my 7210, the document is feed into the document feeder and about half way through, I get the scanner failure, turn off printer message.

Scanner Failure usually results in Hardware Failure. However there is one step you can try. Try connecting the printer directly to wall outlet or any other power outlet and the issue should be resolved.
I had the same problem. I just followed the solution here: http://www.fixya.com/support/t6219664-hp_6110 for "scanner failure". there are instructions on how to remove the document feeder and scanner glass, clean the glass and lubricate the rod that the scanner travels on. I followed the procedure and my printer/scanner now works fine.
This means that there is an internal failure of some kind (e.g. the scanner is stuck). Be sure that the shipping lock has been removed and try again. HP is very good about support, try contacting them through their website or by phone.
