I have an Intermatic T104R timer set up for my pool pump. It seems that the clock is running backwards. Why is that?

If dial is not rotating clockwise and keeping correct time on 240Volt T104 timer, then WG1573 clock motor is probably bad.

Direction is controlled by a gear inside the timer motor cover. When you open the Intermatic door (T100 series - mine is the 220v T104) look thru the circle near the top (use a flashlight) to see the little black gear in the back turning clockwise. If it's going CCW it's running backwards. Turn off power (breaker), unsnap the mechanism (release is at the inside top) and pull the guts forward to access the timer (careful of wiring). The timer cover cap (with the printing on it) can be carefully pried off with a sharp blade or pocket knife. Inside, the 1" gear on the right can be lifted up, turned ? 180? and set back down. The position of the metal lever bar on the bottom side of this gear forces the magnet wheel next to it to go in the proper direction. The lever bar will turn with the gear, until it contacts one of 2 plastic posts. Whichever one it was against, reposition it so the bar turns toward the other plastic post. Mine was running backwards because I took it apart to inspect it (worn gear) and when I modified it to engage with the unworn part of the gear, I (mistakenly) installed the 1" gear in the wrong position, then had to figure out why it was running backwards. This position can't change by itself, so I assume your has ALWAYS run backwards. Running backward WILL cause the timer to bind up when it contacts the adjustable timer tabs. Check clearances of power wires before turning power back on to make sure nothing is shorting. (Reversing the wiring to the timer should not make any difference on an A/C motor.)

I have a pool timer intermatic T104R. My pool is closed for the winter. How do I shut the timer off

There should be a switched power to timer, if not turn breaker off for pump, heater and check again.

How connect a new intermatic t104r 120v

T104 timer is 240Volts.
Not 120Volt
You can convert timer into 120V by changing clock motor from WG1573 to WG1570. This action will convert the T104 into T103.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-Intermatic-clock-motor.html

The T104 timer can be wired many different ways:
Copy following link for illustrations showing both T104 and T103 wiring

Add a comment with specifically what you are connecting to timer, and I will comment back with more detail as needed.

Why is my timer runnung backwards

Timer is not identified.
Analog timers have clock motor.
If the gears strip out, then timer can run backwards.
Some timers have replaceable clock motors, such as Intermatic and Tork box timers, and pool timers.

While small plug in timers generally do not have replacement parts.

Maybe the jammed pin tore up the plastic gears on the timer clock. You can buy the clock for around $16

T104R timer clock has stopped working. I have to manually turn pump on and off.

If you can also turn the pump on and off manually by turning the dial, then the timer motor is bad.

Our intermatic pool pump timer is brand new and is running backward. we bought a second timer and it is also running backward. We had an electrician come out and he can't figure it out either.

You need to check the line voltage being supplied to the timer. It is possible that you have a reversed neutral and common (hot) line providing power to the timer. It is also possible to have another reverse situation with the way the timer is hooked up to the device it is controlling.

Timer motors should only operate in one direction, but if mis-wired, they can operate backwards.

I would need more information about the exact installation you have in order to provide a more thorough diagnois and solution. Info such as is this a 220V-AC installation; is the timer hooked to more than one (1) device (pump, etc.) ; Is there a GFCI breaker on this circuit (there should be!) ; Is this a new installation or a refurbished pool with a new pump & timer?

Please use the "comment" button to supply me with the info requested so I can better address your issue.

Thanks!
