Shutter does not operate. - Nikon D40x Digital Camera

Does the shutter operate when the back is closed? (In other words, does it expose the film?) If so, don't worry about it. If not, it may need service -- or it may be set at such a high shutter speed (1/2000, for instance) that makes the shutter open and close so quickly that you can't see it move.

The "button" is actually just a plastic extension for the actual switch on the printed circuit board. You will have to dismantle the camera to gain access to the board and then use a DMM to test the switch contacts.

Usually when my shutter won't operate, I get an ERR message. I have been able to fix it by turning the camera off and back on. If that doesn't work, I have occasionally had to remove and reinstall the battery.

The D-90 users manual says that the ERR message indicates a camera malfunction and can be cleared by releasing the shutter. But, I found the shutter won't release unless you turn the camera off.

The manual also says if this condition occurs frequently or persists, you should contact an Nikon authorized repair center. I suggest before you do that, that you contact Nikon tech support at www.nikon.com to see what they might suggest.

The usual cause of this is a failure of the motor in the SQ unit that drives the mirror up and down, operates the aperture lever, and charges the shutter. This parts is so notoriously bad that it is on permanent back order at Nikon

Some of the other solutions with popped shutter blades - usually when I see this it is caused by the customer trying to clean his image sensor and having the shutter blades close on his/her tool.

Yes. If you were able to set a faster shutter speed, then you would not expose the entire frame and would have the shadow of either the first or second shutter curtain (or both) partially masking the frame.

At higher speeds, the shutter is never fully exposed: before the first shutter curtain has finished travelling across the frame, the second one has stated it's journey. All SLR's have this issue and on some older models you could only use a maximum 1/60th of a second.

In practice though, in dark conditions the "slow" shutter speed does not affect exposure as the true exposure will be determined by how much light the flash puts out, and it puts this light out in as little as 50 microseconds (50 millionths of a second) for a modern electronic flash bulb.

Faster shutter speeds can be used successfully, but only with flashes which operate in high speed mode. What they do is to make the flash burst seem longer by rapidly firing the flash bulb many times. This trick can ensure that there is sufficient light to expose the frame at the highest shutter speeds. Shutters which operate at, say, 1/4000 may seem fast, but compared to the speed at which a single electronic flash burst operates, it's an eternity.

The Interlace Scan (IS) mode the camera uses a mechanical shutter with shutter speeds up to 1/640th second. It also uses the maximum resolution that is possible with the CCD (5.0 MP). In the Progressive Scan (PS) mode the camera operates with the electronic shutter with shutter speeds up to 1/4000th second and a 1/18000 second shutter speed (1/18000 in Shutter or Manual Priority modes only). In this mode the resolution is reduced in half (2.5 MP).
