Connecting WUSB100 to Wireless G WRT54G

I have a Linksys Wireless G Router (model: WRT 54G) that definitely works well for laptops with wireless capabilities. I recently added a Dell desktop computer to my home and purchased a Linksys Rangeplus Wireless Network USB Adapter (model: WUSB100) to try to connect it to the internet. When I installed the WUSB100 it worked on the first day, but hasn't worked again since then. I am using a WPA-personal setup for the wireless network and have entered the Passphrase into the desktop. Sometimes it shows a strong signal and sometimes a weaker signal (but not less than 50%) on the desktop, but it just won't connect. The wireless router is upstairs and the desktop computer is downstairs in my house (but I can use my laptop right next to the desktop without any problems, so I know the connection is strong enough). Any suggestions of what to do? Do these two devices work well together or is there another wireless adapter that would be better suited to work with my Wireless G (WRT54G) router? Thanks for your help with this!

Laptops have a wide range reciever built around the screen and tend to be far better than a normal usb dongle.

The fact that your pc is downstairs will be effected a lot because the signals from the router will be bouncing around in an area around the antenna and above, signals below will be effected by floors, doors and wall partitions.

Your best solution would be to place the router on a phone line downstairs and see if the signal is increased.

You might have to call ATT, they will have to register the new modem for you. Without this step, you won't have Internet access. Good luck.

II have lost my wireless connection from my HP laptop to my Linksys WRT 54G (ver.2.1) router (after an overnight MS Window XP upgrade. I cannot connect either from my internal communications adapter or...

Power off and power back on your Linksys router first. if that fails, try connecting to one of the Ethernet ports with a cable and see if the router is working in wired mode. Then download and install netstumbler software from http://www.netstumbler.com/ . This will tell you a lot of things, provided your wireless adaptors on the PC are ok.

If the router is still sending out a satisfactory wireless signal, this will show up in NetStumber, and you'll also be able to see whether there are any other (potentially conflicting) routers operating from Neighbors on the same channel as you. If you find a neighboring device on the same channel (ususally 1, 6 or 11), change the channel on your router to which ever one of these is free. Its also possible that the router config might have got itself corrupted; in which case a factory reset option could sort this out (you'd need to re-program the ISP settings, so make sure you have these first!).

Its unlikely that the MS upgrade has stopped the wireless working, but if all else fails and to eliminate all possibilities you could revert using "system restore" from the most recent recovery point.

Linksysy asks for a network key (Wep key or WPA key)

1. Using a computer that is wired to the router, access the router's setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 on the address field of your browser.
2. By default there is no username and password is admin.
3. Once you're in the setup page, click wireless then there is a sub tab there called wireless security.
4. You will find there the wireless key that is enabled in your router.
