This sounds like a failing shutter. Even though the shutter is rated for some 200K actuations, your D2x may have begun to fail even if you haven't come close to that number of pictures yet. Many times, the problem you describe comes with the code "Err" displayed on the bottom in the viewfinder.

Make sure your lens is firmly and securely attached to the body. You'll need to be in focus to make an exposure if in auto focus mode - so switch to manual and see if the shutter releases. Try a different lens to see if it is a problem with just one or all.

it is important to note that Nikon does not warranty the number of actuations - only time since original purchase. You're not entitled to a free repair if you're out of warranty. They may give you a free or reduced repair based on how long you have been out of warranty (assuming you are) - but you should not expect this. Of course, you can haggle with them to get whatever deal you want.

You can arrange for Nikon Factory Service in NY or CA by clicking here.

I hope this helps and good luck! Please rate my reply. Thanks.

Thanks. I checked the manual & found the problem. My memory card was full and I didn't realize this. When memory card is full D2x shutter will not fire.

My shutter won't fire using 18-55 lens, either on Manual, P or Auto mode. It is set to AF. But when lens is set to MF, shutter fires. I tried switching to another lens and shutter is perfectly fine.

I could be that your lens isn't focusing. If the Auto focus can't find something to focus on the shutter won't fire. If you are shooting in low light sometimes it has trouble try shooting something that is well lit. also your auto focus point may be somewhere other than the center. there is a button on the top of your camera that looks like this [ ][ ] [ ] [ ]
More or less that will switch where your focus point is. If you look in the view finder and see a red dot when you push on the shutter button that is your focus point. push the above button until the red dot is in the centre. that may fix your problem.

hiit is not easy to tell what exact problem. It has quite of causes in your case. But I can only tell most common cause that it is sequence unit fail. It could also other like shutter fail, mirror box mech fail, motor fail, control pcb fail, and so on...etc...I recommended you bring to your local service place or Nikon service center which is helpful to you.

How do i replace the shutter on my nikon d2x

If you're asking how to replace the shutter yourself, you need to rethink this. Shutter replacement is a complicated procedure and is best done by a certified Nikon repair facility.

I would like to check the actuations on my DE2X Any ideas Thanks

Nikon claims there is no way to reliably determine the number of shutter actuations. However, there is some data buried in the EXIF info. One way to see this number is with a program called PreviewExtractor, available for Windows from http://drchung.new21.net/previewextractor

My Nikon D2x is having shutter problems, HELP!

the only time i have ever seen this on my D2x is when the lens isnt snapped all the way on. but since you have tried several lenses, i am sure they are snapped on. this leads me to believe something is wrong with one of the contacts on the camera where the lens snaps on--check them to be sure they are springing out and clean. check the owners manual to see if there is another cause for this message.

The camera is probably in Auto Mode. Set it to manual and you can change your ISO, Shutter, and Apeture settings.

How to set up a photograph of a home interior so that exposure of indoor room features closely matches exposure of outdoors as seen through the window. Am using D300 and D2X with three SB-800 flash units....

Some cameras have a slower shutter speed setting that will give you this affect. A tripod will be needed as shooting at slower speeds can cause blur from a shaky hand.
