Look for boot menu
Set the first boot as a HDD and the second boot as cd room and disable the third boot

Can not get the mac pro osx 10 5 8 to start with the utility disk or with regular start up my on pilot lite keeps blinking

Put the Mac install disk back in. Try pressing command-option-escape to force quit. If nothing happens, then press command-control-power to force a restart. If that doesn't work, press and hold the power button for five seconds or so until the computer shuts down. Power up the computer again, and hold the option key so you can select the instal disc for startup. Run Disk Utility again. Sometimes you get a tangled file reference that requires several tries to undo - this could be calling the sleep routine instead of what it's supposed to do.

My hard disk on nx9420 failed (i get the message 'critical error - imminent hard disk failure, save all your data'; but the computer will not boot (just says press 'control alt delete')....

This warningmeans the hard disk will fail sometime in the near future. You need to back upyour data regularly before the hard disk fails or you will lose your data.
When the hard disk fails, you need to replace with a new one and installWindows on the new hard drive to get your computer working again.
If you cannot boot up your computer then -
Remove the hard driveand connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a workingcomputer's USB port. If this computer detects it as an external storage deviceand you can open the various folders and files then back up your data.
If not you are in trouble, there are companies that can recover data fromfaulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

My son's Laptop won't start up ... says it has a boot error....alt ctl delete to restart....over and over again. If I hit esc and try recovery it says files are missing. what to do with this? It...

The first thing to do is extract your data. Recovery means TOTAL RELOAD. The disks for recovery were to be generated when the unit first went into service (rescue, recovery disks). If you did not make those, the files should be on the D:\ drive. BUT Recover all data before you do anything.

My computer says disk read error press cntrl alt then nada

In most cases, all recent versions of Windows use Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the Tasm Manager. You can't usually use that key combo to restart your PC.
When you did that, was any application highlighted as 'not responding?' If so, that is where you should start looking for problems.
Otherwise, try to post additional information for us here.
