You should definitely return it. It is most likely due to backlight malfunction and or backlight invereter malfunction. Either ways you should return it and demand for a replacement if its under warranty.

VIZIO 42in LCD HDTV - Dark colors and flickering

It sounds that the back-light CCFL lamp is faulty. It is time to replace it. When replacing, do it to all CCFLs, because, the life time to these lams are expiring now, as the set is nearly 4 years old. Check this link http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ to get more details about how to replace the CCFLs. Pull up older posts there. Some among it have details.

Dim the lights in the room, turn on the set and shine a bright flashlight on the screen. Do you see a faint image on the screen?

Vizio sv422xvt lcd tv , freezes shuts off and reboots at random, need fix advice, total reset didn't work

Sounds like you might need to replace the main board on the unit. Make certain you get the right one or it will not work. E-Bay might have one.

We recently got a new LG 42" 1080p HDTV and occasionally the screen goes dim/gets slightly darker while we are watching shows. It is not the show as I have tested the same spot the dimness occurs...

It can be the auto-contrast is doing its jobs so LG can claim that the TV has really high contrast ratio, also try turning off auto brightness feature off. It gets real bad when the scene has dark back ground such as the dark sky with stars, the TV will really dim down to give real black sky but at the same time you can barely see the stars on the screen, LG is not the only one with this design problem, VIZIO and other has the same problem as well. If you Google your model and search for review you may see that you are not the only one with this problem.
What is the exact model of this TV.

My vizio 42" lcd hdtv when i turn it on half of my

I have the same TV with the same problem. I'm getting tired of hitting it.

I have been told more than once that if you usa a "Visio" LCD TV in a hot area, such as near a window that gets a lot of sun, they will ****-out. Very sensitive to heat is what I have been told.

I would like to know what to do other than chucking the POS in the trash and buying a new LG.

My Vizio LCD TV screen fades to dark. Sound stays on.

I w having this same issue when watching a Blu-Ray disc. I found it to be dependent upon what picture mode the TV was set to. By this I mean certain picture modes would cause the TV to dim during dark scenes of a movie. Changing the picture mode helped a lot.

Vizio 42" LCD - Random appearance of small black rectangles

I would check and see if you have the text option on under your closed captioning. With the new digital transition the signal for text captioning has been getting messed up during broadcast here lately. If it is on i would just shut it off or go to regular closed captioning.
