Question about Canon G12 Digital Camera
What you are experiencing is a problem with the image sensor / ccd sensor in the camera. It happens on the G12 due to a faulty design. Go to this place www.camerasandparts.com They are very familiar with the problem and it is who we recommend for help with the Canons. It's all they work on. It's $89 through them for parts and labor, including the service and cleaning for the camera. The best part is they do the correction inside the G12 so it won't keep happening on the camera. They are the best for the Canons and it's who we recommend to take care of this problem on the G12's.

The problem is NOT the CCD! If the photos come out fine when viewed on a computer then the problem is either a defective LCD screen or most likely with was accidently turned off.
The Display button toggles the information shown on the LCD (or turns it off entirely). Make sure you haven't inadvertently pressed it and turned off the display. It works as follows:
Press once for Normal view in LCD viewfinder
Press twice to turn on Rule of Thirds grid lines
Press three times to turn off LCD display
Press and hold 1 sec. to decrease/increase LCD brightness

On the back of the camera, on the lower right, below the round Control Dial, there are two buttons, DISP and MENU.
Turn the camera on, then press the DISP button. Press it once and the camera should display an image of the picture you will be taking. Press it again, and the camera will add some additional information to the image. Press it a third time, and the camera will turn off the display.
I suspect this is the current camera state. Try pressing the DISP button, and see if this doesn't fix your problem.

Set the top dial to SCN. Press the Func. Set button on the back. Scroll to the left to show two boxes with the left arrow. Scroll one more for the right arrow tool. The arrow indicates which order you will take the pictures R to L or L to R.
