Make sure you are putting the right cartredge into the right slots. Some printers have the same size cartridge for all the colors and black. If you put one in the wrong slot the printer will not be able to recognize the electronic part of it. Also make sure to remove all the little plastic / tape that is usually on the cartridge when you first buy it.
If you know you put it in the right slot, try taking it out and placing it back it. It might need a simple "re-seat". If this still does not work, you may have a defective product. You then have a choice to buy another ink cartridge (note, you can not return opened ink). Or buy a new printer. IF the printer is under warranty you might want to take advantage of that as well.
