That a LAN boot Rom is used does not affect the keyboard entry used to enter setup.
The BIOS controls if the onboard LAN will run on boot up.
LAN Boot ROMs are used to download operating system code from a network server. So, the BIOS has priority.
The BIOS runs first, and if you enter setup by pushing the proper key for the motherboard, you can change the boot to DVD or another device (USB Stick) to troubleshoot the PC.
Why would you go back to XP after having 7? Installing any operating system: When you first boot the computer you will see a screen that says press: F1, Delete, etc to enter setup. Once you are in setup (BOIS) navigate with keyboard arrows to find 'boot sequence'. select boot from 'cd'. Remember you have to go back and set this to boot from hard drive after you load the OS (Operating System). Make sure you save your files, everything will be gone. Also, backup all of your drivers or download them from the internet and store them on a USB flash drive. As you may not be able to access the internet to load them. Boot from CD>going into setup>install xp>delete partition>create>partition>setup will format drive>quick is fine>will have some prompts for selections, etc. I hope this helps.
I think you need to re-install your os for some files that the Operating System need to boot properly is missing. First, run your xp or any operating system that your using and select repair. after doing this , booting problem will no longer be a problem to you my friend. Have a nice day and i was hoping this would solve your boot problem.
Kindly enter into setup and change the first boot device to Hard Disk. Also check there should not be any pen drive connected and no disc should be in optical drive.
If still the issue persist then please boot the system with operating system disc and check if detects the hard drive and repair the operating system.
Try Install KDE on your desktop, I think its much better than gnome for booting setup. There's another way which one you'd like to booth by striking the F8 key repeatedly on the restart or starting your PC and select the drive which drive you like to boot.Or you can configure it on your bios setup by hitting the del key and configure your boot priority.

Boot the system with your Windows XP installation disk. When the boot options window appears select R for recovery console. Once you have logged into the DOS session type: fixmbr and hit the enter or return key and select "y" for yes you want to do this. Type: fixboot and hit the return key again, hit "y" for yes.
your bought compag computer is a new one , because that error is appears only if the hard drive or the harddisk is defective or damage. Your installation of windows xp is finished totally because sometimes the error is appears because the system installation is not finished and the os system cannot read. try to re install again the windows and delete the old partitions and create again if the problem is the same even there is no error in the installation until it's finished i say that the problem is in the harddisk. Maybe the harddisk develop a bad sector in the master boot record of the hardrive
