Replace thermocouple is best start point.
Example Whirlpool manual shows general replacement steps on page 22:
Buy thermocouple at hardware or home center. measure length before going to store.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Whirlpool-6510397.pdf

Utube videos show how to replace thermocouple

Many things can affect pilot:
Low gas pressure, Water or air or debris in the gas control valve, High-heat event causing ECO to trip requiring new gas control valve, burner and tubes needing clean-out, FV sensor tripped, loose or bad thermocouple.
Manual above shows general steps for doing some of these things, but service technician is probably best choice if thermocouple does not fix problem.

Gas water heaters require periodic maintenance.
If repairs cost more than $330, then buy new gas water heater and install yourself.
Use the old one for a solar collector.

My water heater pilot light won't stay lit

I would try cleaning the thermo couple surfaces with some steel wool... Both where the flame contacts the sensor, and the electrical contacts. Even a small increase in voltage may be enough to hold the pilot valve open. Both black, and white soot on the sensor end, can act as an temperature insulator, lowering the output voltage.

Replace thermocouple gas water heater

Thank you for the brand. Approx how old is water heater? 2nd and 3rd digit of serial number are year of manufacture.
For general instructions:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermocouple.html

Reliance is AO Smith, and air intake is located on bottom of tank.
Inspect and Clean intake.
Do NOT underestimate need to keep air intake clean because the arrestor screen is fine mesh and once clogged will cause heater to fail. Older models might need full replacement and at least parts.

Product manual?
These gas water heaters are changing quickly today. The Reliance site shows the 909 but not 805
http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/lit/om.html
The older designs are different, but instructions shown above will help.

Water heater pilot keeps going out. Relight and may stay lit for a day and then goes out again. Now won't even light at all. Has an igniter button. Also says to clean intake screen every 6 months. Where is...

the intake screen or as is called flame trap is located on the very bottom of the heater underneath. this is very important that you keep this clean or it will keep going out. this is the only way this heater has to get air to the burning chamber.

Atwood gas waterheater with white rodgers gas valve pilot hard to light and not a big enough flame to touch the thermocouple

I think you need to reposition the thermocouple, or adjust the pilot gas pressure by adjusting the pilot screw make sure it is still the recommended gas pressure of the system... please contact a HVAC tech if this things did not work.

Pilot won't stay lit in Reliance 606 gas water heater

The Reliance 606 has an enclosed thermal couple. Before you try taking that assembly apart take a wire brush to the bottom opening directly under the burner. There is a metal filter on the very bottom of the water heater. It could be that the filter has gotten filled with dust or animal hair. It took a serviceman 2 days to figure this out for me. The water heater has to have good airflow through that filter to work well.
