Question about Acer Aspire 5002WLMi Notebook
Laptop does not start. When the start button is depressed, the I/O, hard drive and britghtness LED light up momentarily in green and then shut down. The power supply was checked and is working fine. When the PS is plugged in the computer the battery LED lights up in amber color.
Is this an indication of a bad battery? Isn't the laptop suppose to work when plugged in even if it has a bad battery? Will a bad CMOS battery keep a computer from starting even with the PS plugged in?
It seems like if the flashing LED's at startup are all you get, and that all happens within a couple of seconds it's probably not a heating issue b/c it wouldn't have time to overheat. You could check it by putting the whole machine in the freezer for an hour or so and trying to start it cold. You'll get at least 30 seconds from it if it were a heat issue - long enough to get through POST and into bootup before it locks up anyway. I know AMD's run hot, but I think you may be looking at a bad RAM chip (although usually you would get beeps from the bios for that) or a bad PS or a flaky MoBo. If you have two RAM chips - try going down to one. If you have the extra chip available - try a different RAM chip in it altogether. Usually you can hear a fan making noises before it just quits, and if it just quits most people will notice it b/c the laptop runs almost completely silently without a fan.

This can be an overheat issue. Either the CPU or the Chipset is overheating. Make sure all your fans are working.
Laptops still turn on with the ac adapter plug in and without a battery plugged in. Nope a bad CMOS battery would give you a warning message on the laptop screen, stating the CMOS battery is low or needs to be replaced.
Also does your battery hold a charge? If so with the battery plug in only (without the ac adapter plugged in) does the laptop do the same thing?
