Hello
To reset your Sony TV, you have to enter its service menu options. It is very dangerous to enter into the sevice manu of any TVs, without proper knoledge. Factory reset option is described in the service manual of your TV. I'll give you the procedure, but be caucious, not to change any value of other paramters, some times the set will turn irreparable. Do only the things I describe here. Actually, this should be done by any experienced service technician. So BEWARE.
To get ito its service Menu

[1] Put the TV in standby mode. (Power off).

[2] Press the following buttons on the Remote Commander within a second:
DISPLAY /Channel 5/ Volume +/ POWER On.
The service menu displays

[3] Use the [DOWN] button to view the next category listing the white balance
adjustment items
[4] Continue pressing the [DOWN] button until the next category list displays
[5] Press the button to select TEST RESET options

My TV's picture is cut off at the top so that you are unable to see the top portion of what is on TV. When i use my xbox it is completely centered.

I'm sorry that the picture cuts off from top of the screen. Please follow the troubleshooting steps and check the operation:
  • Please make sure that the connections are secure and proper.
  • Please press the Zoom/Wide button on the remote of the TV.
  • Try connecting a different video source like DVD player or VCR and check the operation.
  • If it works with another device, the issue might be with the input device currently.
  • Also try connecting the device to a different port in the TV if no other devices are available.
  • Perform a power resetting and check the operation. To perform the power resetting, unplug the TV from wall outlet for more than 2 minutes and then reconnect it.

If the issue persists, after all above troubleshooting steps, service may be required. You can click hear to setup a service for the TV.

Picture Problems!!! TOSHIBA TP55D80 REAR PROJECTION TV.

Look up your user manual, it sounds like your zoom feature has been activated to the max. I have a Zenith backlit LCD TV and it has a zoom feature you control from your remote. You could open up your on screen menu and find the place to reset the TV to factory settings that should clear up the problem.

Can't read Subtitles

Look on your TV remote for an aspect button. There are usually several different aspects to choose from.

Heads cut off on the screen

Ocean's Eleven. Best remake movie, I think.
I believe your TV is in "ZOOM" mode for the screen. This will make a 4x3 picture come up closer to fill in the 16x9 screen, but this cuts off the top and the bottom.
Keep pressing the WIDE button on your remote until the picture looks best.
If you have HD channels, the screen mode should be on NORMAL. HD channels will have the 16x9 screen format.

The non-HD channels will have 4x3 screen format. When the screen mode is on NORMAL, you will have the cut off picture on the sides because the 4x3 format will not fill in a 16x9 screen.

Red lines across bottom portion of screen

usually strong magnets like those in speakers cause lines on tvs if placed to close to the tv.
so demagnitizing the screen should work .
you may have to take it into a pepair shop to do this.
but if thats not the problem. you moe than likely are seeing a common problem of tv screen burn out. and these new tvs tend to burn out faster than the old ones did.

Screen is cut off top/bottom

I had the same problem on my 47 inch Westinghoust HDTV. It turned out to be a problem related to my satellite tv (Direct TV) remote controller. Someone inadvertently hit the "format" key and jacked it up. I set back to it's original position and get the full screen. Don't know if you have cable or satellite, but this may help someone having this problem,

Solution

You have a bad vertical output IC or a bad capacitor(s) in the vertical driver or output circuits. Not a job for the user to do unless you have the proper tools as well as a service manual. Good Luck
