Can't pull the starter cord, it's very hard to do. Removed spark plug and then the pull cord worked fine. Put the spark plug bvack in and once again the starter pull cord was hard to pull. Seems like a compression lock? Saw is a Echo CS-330T

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly
Remove the muffler and clean out the exhaust port and screen. You will have to disassemble the muffler and clean off or replace the screen item 8 of this link:
http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=echo&mn=CS-330T++S%2FN%3A+C08611001001+-+C08611999999&dn=7946

Before taking the muffler apart... unhook the spark plug and just pull it though with the muffler removed. If it pulls normally you know you have found the problem.

If it still pulls hard...check the exhaust port of the cylinder head for 2 tiny holes (not screw holes) Some have them some don't depending upon the year of the saw. If you do find 2 small holes that appear clogged with carbon... do your best to clean them out.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

The next step is to remove the carb and inspect the intake. You must clean both the intake and the exhaust . The final step is to remove the cylinder head and soak it in B-12 Chemtool or a similar solvent for about 12 hours along with cleaning the piston. There are grooves in the cylinder wall that port fuel between the crank case and the top of the cylinder. If those roughly 1/2 inch wide grooves get clogged you will have high compression. The Saw needs a serious head and cylinder cleaning and it should be fine. Until it has been cleaned you will have this problem. Anytime we have one come into the shop with this complaint we put the cylinder head, muffler and piston into a solvent tank for most of the day with flowing solvent. It works. Most home owners do not have solvent tanks that would be safe to use.

2 cycle leaf blower pulls hard and will not start. when s[park plug is removed it pulls normally. What is the fix?

Small engines usually have a high compression ratio meaning the pull start is hard to pull unless pulled with plenty of energy. Once the engine has started spinning much less force is needed to keep it spinning until the starter cord reaches the full travel.

The fact no significant resistance is felt when the spark plug is removed reinforces my comment above.

Pull Cord Stops...

could be valve needs set. if it isn't opening at the right time it wont release compression for it to start. it may be the shear key in the flywheel has sheared if you have hit something like a big rock or log or something causing it to die suddenly.

Why cant I pull the starter cord

If its on the compression stroke when you are pulling it will be hard to pull it, because you're fighting against the compression of the engine, make sure the valves are at the correct position and not fully closed when you are pulling.

Saw starter pulling too hard to start.

Check piston rings. Sounds like you have a seized engine.

Hello I have an echo pb-500T, my cord won't pull.

Remove the impeller and check for loose motor mount screws. With the impeller off and the spark plug removed and the pull start functioning properly; if it still wont pull then its likely internal and due to be replaced.

McCulloch chainsaw 338 wont start

Unfortunatly this machine appears to have seized on the piston, there is no other answer but to pull it apart and see how much damage has occured, it may well be beyond economic repair, as it will probably require a cylinder and piston.

I have a 2 year old Ryobi RY34440 String trimmer, 30cc. Last year worked fine, this year pull cord is so easy to pull it doesn't even turn engine over. Is is the spark plug?

Either the pull starter is not pulling or you are not getting compression. To check you need to check the spark plug is still snug. If so, remove the plug and put a drinking straw in the hole to touch the piston. Slowly pull the starter to see if the piston is moving. If the piston is moving and the plug was snug then you are losing compression somewhere, like a head gasket. If not moving then the problem most likely is in the starter, and disassembly required to investigate.

I have a wild thing. the rope pull starter is very hard to pull. when i take the spark plug out it is easy to pull. the saw was not used for about 4 years until yesterday. it ran for about 45 minutes fine....

one piston ring has expanded now having no or a very fine gap increasing the compression ratio causing this to happen. When the spark plug is removed it is very easy to pull on the cord in any means. A inspection is due of this engine or a new chain saw is needed

Pull cord difficult to pull..removed from saw it works fine..with spark plug installed hard to pull ..with plug removed (of course there is no compression) ,the pull cord pulls easily..saw worked greatall...

Make sure someone hasn't run this saw without the oil in the fuel mixture. It is possible it is dry and some galling is happening. Or - if this saw is equipped with a compression bleeder (for easier starting), this could be not functioning and you're pulling through the normal compression (which can be a bit feisty!). Check for misalignment of some type having to do with the pull starter - check that the cord spool isn't rubbing on the housing when you pull. Good luck.
