Sounds like a little sand and / or moisture made it's way into the camera. A call to the Sony Company Tech Support will let you know if one of the canned compressed air cleaners for computers would be advisable.

Another thought is to check if there is something in or near the hinge of the tape hatch apparatus. Sometimes I take one of those electronics foam "Q-Tips" and wipe out the area in case a piece of dust or fuzz or something is causing a malfunction.

E04 unit in safeguard mode

I tried every method I could find from people posting on the web, but the method that worked for me is this.

1. Eject the tape and close the tape holder.
2. Turn the camera off and remove the battery.
3. Put the battery back in. Leave the camera off.
4. Open the tape holder.
5. Slide the tape in, but as you press the holder in to accept the tape, keep your finger pressing in on the holder, being careful not to slow the tape holder from moving downward.
6. Turn the camera on.
7. If it doesn't work the first time, press more firmly to help the tape holder accept the tape.

That's it. This method seems to work for me and lets me use the camera for a long while. If the camera is sitting unused for more than a few hours, I have to do it again. And each time I insert a tape, I make sure that I keep pressing as the tape holder lowers the tape.

Trouble using dcr-trv6 mini dv camcorder

This is a common failure in this model and unfortunately will not be resolved without a qualified servicer. The error code indicates a message for lack of reel motion. Most often it is an electronic connection problem and not an actual reel problem. Good luck, magic seadog

Trouble working sony dcr-trv6 mini dv digital camcorder

( c : cassette : 30 capstan fg ) ; your capstan motor is stalling - try ( other brand ) new tapes and gently ! swaying camera from side while loading - if loads , your tape mechanism is dirty or is going out of alignment ; - - if the camera will not unload tape ? the capstan motor may be failing ( connector is loose , corroded ) or - it is jammed and it needs . . . disassembly . . . to complete checking .

Chewing up mini-dv tapes

These type of problems usually result from damage to the tape transport mechanism, Unfortunately they are impossible to fully diagnose without a physical examination of the mechanism.
There is not a magic tweak for this i'm afraid.
