Tip & How-To about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

Playstation Network Services Down - When will the playstation network be back up?

Sony PlayStation Network online but still unsecured?
Sony setup a website to help users change passwords using your email address and date of birth, however, what Sony forgot was the hackers have this information and can easily obtain your password again. Sony states that no further hacking has been attempted and the website has been taken down. Sony needs to get their head out of their ***** and get on game. Sony users should be very worried. I recommend you change your email address with Sony as soon as possible and associate your PSN account with the new email.

After 1 month the PSN is back up and running. Users are required to download updates then reset passwords. Sony has announced a Welcome Back package to consumers. The welcome package includes a choice of two PlayStation3 games, or two PlayStation Portable games. Games will be available for 30 daysafter the online store comes back online, according to Sony. Customers willalso receive a selection of free movie rentals and 100 virtual items. Non PSNsubscribers will get a free 30-day membership while existing customers will receive30 days extra.

This should not fool users as it seems the PlayStation Network is still unsecured...

Security researches using targeted google searches have been able to uncover exploits in Sony's network, includingthe Sony Corporation of America, Sony Pictures Entertainment and SonyElectronics, an old gift card registry sweepstakesthat collected personal information of customers. It seems, even after 1 month of downtime, Sony is still unable to properly secure their networks. This should scare all PlayStation users. It is only a matter of time before hackers infiltrate and disrupt services once again.

Heavy traffic has caused some users not to be able to download upgrades and access the PSN. You can find password reset instructions at the link below, as well as updates straight from Sony.

Sony will be offering a "welcome back" package to consumers after restoration is complete.
The package will include benefits such as a month of free PlayStation Plus membership for all PSN customers, as well as an extension of subscriptions for PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited customers to make up for the lost time.

Trigger fingers are itching to get back in the action.
Many users report that PSN has been up and down all day as well as some Sony web pages. How long will it take Sony to get things up and running?

update 5/14 - PSN Down, still.

The PlayStation Network is still down. The last update Sony gave on a timeline was May 10th and they stated, "I know you all want to know exactly when the services will be restored. At this time, I can't give you an exact date, as it will likely be at least a few more days. We're terribly sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work through this process."

News has just been released showing that the attack on the PlayStation Network originated from Amazon Servers. The attackers set up fake AWS(amazon web services) accounts and rented servers to carry out the attack. Afterwards, the accounts were deleted to hide any footprints. Bloomberg reports that the FBI will continue an investigation into this new revelation and subpoena Amazon for further information.

A few more days? Sony customers are no doubt getting more frustrated as the PSN outage drags on. Some game retailers are seeing a 200% increase in PS3 exchanges for Xbox systems. The damage to Sony will only be increased as the PlayStation Network remains down. You can read more about the PSN outage below. Keep checking back for further updates.

update 5/13 - PSN still down
Between April 17 and April 19th of 2011 the PSN was accessed by unauthorized personnel resulting in the theft of personal and credit card information of tens of millions of Sony consumers. Once this was discovered Sony brought down PSN and it has been down ever since. Sony claims this was theft was perpetrated by the online group called Anonymous.

Sony claims that they take "information protection very seriously", yet if they did, why did they just lose millions of customers personal information? With the PlayStation network down, and with no end in site, I hope they are really concentrating on beefing up security and patching loopholes in the playstation network. When will the PlayStation network be back up?

It is saying my password and/or e-mail address is incorrect and when i click 'forgot password' it is saying my date of birth is also incorrect, what can i do about this?

Your best bet is to go online to the PSN Network and try there. You'll need to know the date of Birth and the email of the account you need a password for, so hopefully you remember what you chose.
