would most likely be rear bearing have to replace spindal with it/parts are costly and that is one of the tougher ones to do ..check you warrity may still have some on outer tub and inner basket...good luck
if its a front load machine its most likely your tub bearing. usually hear of this in the maytag neptunes when they get about 7-10 years old. either way top load or front laod your looking at alot of money for parts. in excess of 500 bucks just for 1 part. as most frontloads you have to purchase a new outter tub to get the tub bearing. would start looking for a new washer if it was me.
The loud noise during the spin cycle is probally due to a bearing failure. Not sure how much it would cost to fix, but Maytag does not sell you the bearings but would sell you a new wash tub with the bearings installed for over $600! Add the labor costs which would be a lot since the machine needs to be taken apart to install a new tub, and you would be ahead of the game getting a new washer.
That bearing is part of the outer tub and is a big job.
you can get a diagram here . The bearing is not shown because it is part of the outer tub.
I would verify that if you decide to do this. but I remeber doing just one and it was a $600.00 Job, Of course that was with labor. the tub itself is over $425.00
The wholesale cost of the part is about $400+shipping. You'd pay more... I'm in the business and mine did the same thing. When we couldn't turn the TV up loud enough anymore, I pitched it and bought a Duet!
I rented the tool and it worked fine. The replacement steel washer had an extra rubber insert that took me a few assemble/test/disassemble cycles to find. That cost me time and the $90 late surcharge on the rental. All told though, it went as described online and in the dvd that came with the rental. Just see that the replacement parts fully match what you are replacing.
My question is whether someone else has done this and had the new bearings last more than a couple months. Two and a half months in, the washer is winding up as when the first bearings went bad. This is not a good sign, and I question the quality of the bearings.
The Neptune bearings are an interesting breed... Maytag wants you to replace the whole outer tub which includes the bearings installed for $180 or so. You can replace the bearings yourself. See www.tonytool.com to see how it is done. The tool costs $379 or so... but it is designed for the service tech. not the d.i.y.er. But watching the video can give you an idea of how to do it yourself. The bearings were available on www.neptunewaxmotor.com for about $35.00. You will also need the Maytag seal kit 12002022 to complete the job whether you decide to replace bearings or the outer tub.
Had the same problem with my Neptune and is was not the bearing (there's only one). I replaced my washer with a new tub and bearing which was factory pressed in the tub (couldn't just by the bearing) after all this I found that the spinner support (which has three arms holding the tub) on the back of the tub had one of the three bolts broke and was throwing the washer out of balance and creating a loud knocking sound when it would spin. Replaced the stainless bolt and everything was fine. The repair man told me what he thought was wrong with my machine so I did the repair myself and found out after the fact that I wouldn't have had to spend all the money on the new parts if I would have just investigated the problem further.
