Garmin Rino 110 (14 Channels) 2-Way Radio Logo
Anonymous Posted on May 10, 2011

I've got a pair of Garmin Rino 110 that we use when outdoors. Recently, with full batteries and clear skies in the desert, not surrounded by trees, mountains, buildings, etc... both of the Rino 110s are reporting weak satellite signal and often losing the signals altogether. Often times it will not recover the signal for hours, even with new batteries and reboots. I emailed Garmin and was told basically that the Rinos **** and I'm out of luck. Email from Garmin is Below. My question is: Is there a known issue with the Rino GPS receiver/antenna that can be fixed in order to prevent the weak/lost signal? Perhaps a bad connection type within the unit that can be repaired, much like the battery contact issue that is often reported on the Rinos? Or, does anyone know if it's possible to solder a new, more sensitive internal or external GPS antenna onto the RINO board? ************************ Email response from Garmin: Thank you for contacting Garmin International. It is my pleasure to assist you. I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with the devices losing satellite signal. Your devices do not have high sensitivity receivers. For best results, you will want to make sure the firmware is up to date. The current version is 3.90. As noted in your message, your devices are up to date. I apologize for any inconvenience. If you need any further assistance, please feel free to contact us. With Best Regards, Terry M Product Support Specialist Outdoor/Fitness Team Garmin International

  • That RINO should have no issues picking up satellite signals in the conditions you were in. If you were inside a building I may buy it but not in an open desert. Sounds like they are feeding you a line to me. I might try to get my money back on that one. One thing is for sure, you were in about the best conditions for using that unit. If it failed you then, it will more than likely fail you when your life may rely on it. It would seem that a different GPS/GMRS unit will be necessary to give you that security.

I have experienced recent problems with my Garmin Rino 130. First, it was working well with the Garmin website, and allowed me to upload my tracks to their site on several occasions. However, recently I went to the Garmin website, and it no longer recognizes my Rino 130, which is interesting considering that Garmin just introduced the new Rino's. I talked with one of the techs at Cabellas, and he told me that I was the second person to tell him that their Garmin had suddenly lost the ability to be recognized.
I wondered if anyone else is having the same troubles, and if, perhaps, Garmin has shut down the older units to pressure their customers into buying the newer Rinos...

What are you using as a browser? Chrome does not seem to work for uploading. The best results are reported on IE.

Have you updated your Plug-In? http://www8.garmin.com/products/communic...

Here is the 5.9 Garmin 130 update. Have you installed this one yet? It's important to keep up with the software as sometimes things will start messing up if you don't https://www8.garmin.com/support/download...

Let me know if that helps at all.

Rino 530 keeps loosing signal was hunting in Canada using rino while walking . keeps saying no satalite

The GPS needs a clear view of the sky and at least 3 or more satellites to get a fix on your position. If you are under a heavy canopy of tree cover / brush, it can affect accuracy and even the GPS's ability to get a fix at all. Also, if you are in a mountainous region, the geometry of your location and the location of the satellites over the equator could be obstructed, resulting in the lost satellite messages. You must have an unobstructed view of the southern sky to get a fix.

If you are able to get a fix in an open area, the GPS is able to do its job, but the location you're trying to use it in is offers too much interference to capture satellite signals.

Making sure you've got the latest firmware from Garmin can solve a lot of troubles, too. If you still believe that your GPS isn't working the way it should, contact Garmin Support.

I hope this helps - and good luck. Please rate my reply - thank you.

Batteries do not fuction well in cold weather. Use a better battery like the lithum or warm up the battery by rubbing back and forth on your pants both sides pos and neg.

Garmin Rino 110 Posted by nightjar on Jun 29, 2008 My two 110's have same problem. With two new sets of different brand NiMh rechargeables the problem still exists. Both units get warm and flatten the...

Re : " Both units Garmin Rino 110, overheat and flatten the batteries within 2 hours"

That is a factory defect related to a bad contact inside the unit.

If you contact garmin and insist to talk to a supervisor (second line) you can have both Rinos replaced.

Ensure it is not a bad batteries problem first testing a replacement battery, both batteries may have deteriorated at same time.

Buy first a replacement battery at Garmin eTrek, Rino 110/120 NiMH Battery,

If that does not solve the problem call Garmin:

To make un full reset

Hello Rahooty,

There is no way to set the date and time becayse the system clock in your Garmin Rhino 120 should be updating based on the information it receives from the GPS satellites. The radio should auto locate itself within about five minutes of being turned on providing it has a clear view of the sky. Once it sucessfully auto locates the radio's clock and position should reset. There does not appear to be any other reset built into the device.

Try taking the batteries out for at least 5 minutes. Then, reinstall the batteries, turn the unit on, and give the unit 5-10 minutes to auto locate. If it doesn't, you may need to contact Garmin support for additional sevice.

Best Regards,
Ken

Garmin Rino 130 Shut Down

I had the same problem; mine would shut off when bounced around too.
I used a #0 phillips screwdriver (very small) to take out the 6 screws that hold the case together, Carefully separate the face and back because there are wires that can be broken if you pull them apart too fast.
After you get the case apart, lift up the circuit board at the bottom and you will see a small blade pin that sticks out from the side where the batteries are and is supposed to slide up into a contact on the circuit board. I guess over time it starts to wiggle and get loose so I carefully bent the pin (very slightly so it would rub the inside of the contact.
So far I have tested it by dropping and beating it up a little and it seems to have fixed the problem.
Hope this helps.
