This usually happens when the wrong type of card is inserted. For example, your camera takes SD cards. If you try to use an SDHC card, the camera cannot work with it and just stalls.
The card that is in the camera is a Lexar SD 1GB. The card is inserted the right way. There isn't any scratches on the pins on the back. The safety "key" is to the top of the card. New batteries were inserted. And without the memory card the camera works properly, taking pictures on the internal memory.
