Your Hotpoint fridge is designed to operate at a temperature ranging from 0.5 degrees in the coldest part up to 5 degrees inthe warmest part. As warm air rises and cold air falls it is safe to say that the best way to store your food is to place it in the most appropriate shelf compartment, as shown in the diagram below.
What should a Hotpoint fridge temperature be?
SOURCE: best temperture to keep up right freezer and a different refrigerator
Freezer temperature for storage depends on the type of product you are putting into it. Ice Cream as an example must be kept below zero °F as also with bread dough type products. Refrigerator temperatures are best kept below 41°F.

Hi, are you getting ice or frost build up.
The most common part that goes bad on these are the defrost heaters. THe defrost heater is below the evaporator coil and usually has a blue and pink wire to it. Test the heater for continuity. If it tests open, replace the heater. If it tests closed, check continuity on the bi-metal stat located on top the evaporator fast to the coil. The bi-metal stat has to be tested cold. Again, if it tests open, replace it.
If both of these test ok. you wil need to replace the defrost control.
Please let me know if this has helped you or if I can assist you further.
Thanks
