I have an expression 2038 and the stitching has suddenly changed so that the top stitching is quite good but the underneath is loose. I have the tension on 4 and have a new straight needle and good quality thread. the underneath or bobbin thread is almost not catching.

If the bobbin thread is too loose, remove the bobbin spool AND carrier.Thread the thread through the tension clip on the holder in the normal way. Hold the thread and lift it. If the bobbin slides down, tighten the small screw 1/8 turn clockwise, until you can lift it with little or no sliding.

Sounds like your tension is vibrating off to a least tension position, When the machine does this again check your tension button. Hope this is the solution?

When in the center needle position is selected, the needle is not centered, it is left of center. When the right needle position is selected, the needle sits only slightly to the right of center. How can...

Make sure machine is set for regular zigzag stitch and not a fancy zigzag stitch, and rotate it by hand at least two full revolutions in the normal direction of rotation to make sure it is settled in to the regular zigzag stitch. Now set the stitch width to maximum width and slowly rotate it by hand, watching the needle. Does the needle strike the top of the foot at the extreme left or right? (and this is the slotted zigzag foot, right?) If not, you are good to go. If the needle does hit the top of the foot squarely, do make sure that the foot is mounted correctly and change the needle, making sure it is the correct size and that it is inserted all the way and facing the right direction. It is somewhat unlikely that the left to right position of the needle bar needs adjusting.

As i sew a regular straight stitch the top looks fine, but the underneath of fabric looks like it is one big long stitch

Do you mean to say that there is just a piece of thread laying on the surface of the fabric? Does the top stitching just pull right out when you pull on the thread end? Double checking the needle for being inserted correctly is the first place to start.

I own a singer 14sh654. Bottom stitch really loose, don't know what to set any of the dials at to make it work right. The top stitch is neat tight bottom all over the place

Hi. Loose stitching underneath means you need to increase the upper tension. Try just a little at a time, using scrap fabric of similar weight to what you want to sew.

My Singer portable (#6202/62120) keeps stitching nicely on top, but the bottom stitching is all knotted up! It's driving me crazy! I have tried everything. Any help would be greatly appreciated....

The bottom side is effected by the TOP tension. First make sure the top is threaded correctly. Best thing to do is completely unthread it and then thread it again. Then check the tension and make sure it is not too loose. Check the needle to make sure it is inserted correctly and not bent.

Once you've done that then you can take a look at the bobbin tension and make sure it isn't too loose too. Make sure the bobbin is in the case correctly, wound correctly and that the bobbin case is completely inserted right. You will hear and or feel a slight "click" when it goes in correctly,

HAVING A PROBLEM WITH MACHINE JAMMING UP AROUND BOBBIN AREA WHEN TRYING TO FREEHAND EMBROIDER IT STARTS OFF OK THEN QUICKLY JAMS UP HAVE ADJUSTED THE FOOTPLATE SO THERE ARE NO TEETH

Check your tension first by sewing a wide zig zag stitch. Does the top of the stitch and the bottom look identical? The sides of the stitch should look like a hole where the thread disappears to the other side, with no extra thread from the other side coming through. It also should lie flat and not be puckering in the middle. When it looks identical and no puckering the tension is correct. Use the same type of material and thread you will be using for the embordery. The bottom side of the stitch is effected by the TOP tension. The top side of the stitch by the BOTTOM tension.

Are you stretching the material you're hand embordering with a hoop?

The dog feed needs to be totally down and if your machine has an adjustment the tension on the foot should be lessened too. (not all machines allow for that adjustment).

Last but not least make sure you have the right needle for the job and material.

Jamming up in the bobbin area would most likely be from the top tension being too loose but also make sure the material isn't getting pulled down in by stretching it with an embordery hoop. Do use a presser foot... a wide clear one is best.

Totally rethread your machine, if the underneath threads are looping it is your threading on top that is causing the problem. Make sure that you thread is not tangled.
