Hi Vedant,

first of all I would check the cooling fans, particularly the one for the cpu, you will see if it is spinning if you remove the side case. (DONT TOUCH ANYTHING INSIDE WHILE THE PC IS SWITCHED ON) If the fan is spinning ok, then check for dust build up around the cpu cooler. If it needs cleaning, switch the machine off first and unplug from the power supply. Touch a bare metal part of the case before attempting anything to discharge any static electricity you have in your body. Clean any dust build up away and try booting the machine again. If still no joy, Check your RAM modules, try removing them one at a time to see if one is faulty. If you have more than 1 stick of ram, make sure when you remove one, to put the remaining module into the slot closest to the cpu.

I hope at least some of what I said turns out to be helpful to you

Overheating. The shutting down is a fail-safe. You need to first open your cabinet and check your fans and make sure that your computer aren't filled with dust. If it is blow it out with air duster and it should solve the problem.
If your fans have failed, you'll need to replace them. If they haven't, your next step is to increase their speed. The utility below will monitor you temperature and increase your fan's speeds to keep the system cool. If you are unable to cool your computer down to the point where it stays on, your power supply had gone bad and needs to be replaced.

Dell has a series of tests for a system's hardware called the PSA+ Diagnostics. You can run these tests by performing one of the following actions:
  • Hold down the key while pressing the power button.
  • Turn on the system, press at the initial Dellâ„¢ logo screen, and select Diagnostics from the boot menu.
  • Disconnect the AC power and remove the battery. While holding down the power button, insert the AC connector into the back of the system. The system then starts and the message Diagnostic boot selected displays. The system then launches the PSA+ Diagnostics.
  • As for the laptop shutting down, that usually indicates your CPU (Central Processing Chip) is overheating. This is caused by dust or defective CPU fan or heat-sink.

Setup powering down after 5 minutes of being on.

Enter you're bios & head to CPU section. There should be a section to check CPU & motherboard tempture. Sit back & watch the temp settings. (Check for over-heating which can & will shut down the system). It's best to do this with the case closed. Normal operation.
Did you add thermal grease between heat-sink & CPU. Same can happen if memory over-heats.

My home pc trouble in windows xp professional

Hi chirutha,

Which version of Windows are you running? I would suggest running System Restore to a point maybe a week ago and then trying it again. You can find System Restore from your Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools menu. System Restore for Windows is non-destructive and won't delete any data files (music, pictures, documents) that you've put on the computer. It's also reversible.

You can also access System Restore directly from booting into Safe Mode (after the system POST startup messages run when the computer is booted up, press F8 until the Windows Boot Menu comes up and select Safe Mode).

If you can't power your computer down, hold your breath and then hold the main power button for five seconds and it will shut down.
