May be caused by: ? An incorrect antenna mast installed for the antenna base equipped with the vehicle ? Poor ground at the antenna base or radio ? Poor battery ground to chassis or engine ? Poor antenna cable connection at Radio ? Corrosion at the antenna coaxial connectors at radio or antenna Service Vehicles are equipped with either a Bosch or a Clarion antenna base mounted on the roof and (for shipping purposes) the appropriate matching mast is located in the luggage compartment. If radio antenna masts are removed from vehicles and stored until vehicles are sold, there is a chance that an incorrect mast can be installed at the time of delivery. Note: Mismatched antenna mast and base will cause poor AM radio reception. The antenna base and mast can be identified visually as follows: (Cont. on Page 2)91-A260 requires gloss finish antenna mast 57mm 49mm Bosch 91-A261 requires matte finish antenna mast 61mm 41mm Clarion 91-A262 Technical Bulletin Important! 2002 Oldsmobile bravada x going through batteries AutoZone everybody says there's nothing wrong with it in the radio you can touch any electrical control throughout the car you can even touch the gear...

Good advice from Ray but I recommend you check the aerial ground at the lead end - this also checks the cable, check also for continuity between the mast and the aerial plug centre.

If a signal preamplifier is fitted, which is often the case when a short antenna or window antenna is fitted, the antenna lead will connect to the preamp and similar check will have to be performed on the screened lead from the preamp to the radio. Check also the supply and ground to the preamp if fitted.

It is also important the radio has a reliable ground so it isn't trying to draw current down the antenna or aerial ground. Sometimes in order to keep the signal-to-noise ratio to a minimum, it is necessary to fit a braided ground strap to the case of the radio.

Can not get DAB radio too work on my Vita audio but FM radio works fine

This may be because you live in an area where DAB reception is currently poor, but to check this, please use our postcode checker (see 'check your DAB coverage' panel on the right) to see which DAB stations you should be able to receive. If reception for your area appears to be good, then it may be down to local conditions or building materials. Buildings constructed from steel and reflective glass are not good for radios with internal aerials as they reflect and greatly reduce the strength of signal. In such a case an external aerial will greatly improve reception, but most importantly, if you are using the supplied telescopic aerial, you should ensure that it is properly fitted and fully extended upright.
Secondly, when our products are first powered up from new, they automatically scan the DAB network to see which services are available. During this process it is important that the radio is not touched and that the aerial has been correctly fitted and extended as instructed. If this has not been done then it is likely that not all stations will be detected and only the strong ones displayed. To correct this a new AutoScan/AutoTune or System Reset should be performed as instructed elsewhere in our Q&A's.

VW Polo 1.0 1999, Aerial not working

It is usually best to check an aerial from the radio end with an ohmmeter or continuity checker. The aerial cable is a coaxial cable with a centre core that carries the signal and an outer braid that when properly grounded keeps interference to a minimum.

Measuring between the centre and the outer there should be an infinity reading on an ohmmeter, indicating no short circuits in the cable or aerial base. Measuring between the outer and a good ground the reading should be very low, no more than a few ohms indicating a good ground connection to the aerial base and of the aerial base to the bodywork.
The next test is simple and tricky at the same time as one lead of the meter will need extending. Remove the aerial mast and test for a very low reading of just 2 or 3 ohms between the cable centre and the stud or socket where the mast mounts. If all tests are fine it indicates the mast has an internal fault. If the tests aren't fine the cause is fairly intuitive.

To some extent you can perform the tests at the aerial base but the results will be limited due to the physical connection between the cable and aerial base won't be part of the test.

You need to be aware some installations are fitted with an aerial amplifier which can confuse matters and make checking more difficult.

Just had a new windshield installed in my 2007 toyota tacoma and now i have no radio reception could one have to do with the other

Yes- If you originally had the antenna in the windshield like many 1970's era GM cars and trucks, yor new windshield may not have it, or if it does- it may not have been connected. There should also be a trimmer adjustment on the side or bottom of the radio to trim the new antenna for best reception. It may also be located where you can adjust it fromthe front if there is an access hole to a screw that does not appear to be attached to the outside case of the radio. Turning it slightly should make noise if it does not immediately improve reception..

If you have an antenna mast, it may be the mast shifted, in which case it is a matter of putting the mast int he original location and tightening the mouting nut down so a good ground is achieved with the fender. You can tell if you turn on the radio and then pull the mast down and let go- you will hear the radio go in and out of reception.

Poor quality reception on radio of my Porsche Boxster S which I just picked up at the weekend. Year 200 model. The CD player works fantastic and the sound quality from the speaker system is excellent...

It might be a dud radio but if you are lucky it could be the aerial or aerial preamp if one is fitted. Removing the radio so a known good test aerial can be plugged in is the best first step.

I just installed a new Sony XT-100HD HD Radio Tuner for my truck. I wanted it so i could pick up more stations and have them all sound clear. After I hooked everything up to see if it worked all I could...

It is always worth checking the aerial in any case of poor reception.

In the case of a standard mast-type aerial it is necessary for the mast to have very good continuity to the centre of the aerial plug, that the outer part of the aerial plug has good continuity to the aerial ground and thus to the vehicle bodywork and the two parts are electrically isolated from each other. A good independent radio ground connection also helps.

In the case of miniature aerials or those within a windscreen, a rear screen or rear quarter glass, the amount of signal available will be small and so an aerial preamplifier will be provided to boost the signal. The preamp might be part of the aerial or a separate unit fitted anywhere convenient. I once found one fixed to the front firewall behind the dashboard.
The preamp needs a good 12 volt supply and a ground as well as good connections to the aerial coaxial leads. The supply is usually obtained from the radio set so it is operative only when the radio is switched on. Sometimes a radio has a dedicated output but mostly the electric (automatic) aerial output must be used. If the preamp isn't working reception will typically be limited to a few powerful stations.

I hope this helps.

Poor radio reception on a Santa Fe that has the aerial as part of the near side rear window, is there a mod to improve reception.

if you live in a weak reception area the only answer is a signal booster or a new aerial on the roof.

2005 jeep liberty with poor radio reception...took the 3 bolts out of the top of fender and the 2 out of the side to get to the antenna cable....as soon as the 5 bolts were out the radio reception came...

Difficult to guess exactly what is happening but it would seem one or more of the bolts is pressing on the aerial cable and shorting it out.

Best way to check an aerial cable, which is coaxial type, is to disconnect it from the radio and use an ohm meter to check the continuity.

The centre core should have continuity to the aerial mast and the outer (screen) should have continuity to ground and the two should be insulated from each other.
It is also necessary to verify the radio has a good independent ground as it isn't good if the radio is grounding through the antenna.

If an aerial preamplifier is fitted there will be no continuity between the radio and aerial mast and each section of cable must be tested separately.
