I have the same problem. An N70 with the err message. If the rewind buttons are pressed (without any film in the camera) the camera tries to rewind but will only stop if the back is opened. I tried removing the batteries for more than a week without any luch.

Did you remember to push the rewind release button, on the bottom of the camera first? Failure to do so will either not allow you to rewind the film (without applying a lot more force than needed), rip off the film sprocket holes, damage the camera's internal gearing, or any number of other nasty things.

There should be a small button on the camera's bottom baseplate, press it in and it should rewind smoothly.

To rewind the film mid-roll, press the two film rewind buttons simultaneously for one second. The two buttons are marked with a red film symbol, and double as the Auto Exposure Bracketing button to the left of the viewfinder and the Aperture/Exposure Compensation button to the right of the control panel.

The film is completely rewound when a blinking "E" shows in the control panel.

Jim, it really sounds like one of threethings. Either will require a repair shop.
1. the film sensor is not recognizing film in the film chamber, or film across the back, therefore not telling the advance motor to advance film...
2. The film advance motor itself needs replaced.
3. The rear door latch switch needs replaced.
Since everything else seems to do OK, I doubt the main computer board is bad.

On the N80 - there are custom functions you can set in terms of when a film rewinds. Normally it is default to rewinding automatically at the end of a film. If this setting has been changed, or you want to rewind a film before the end - you need to press two buttons and hold them, at the same time.

The first button is the LCD backlight button next to the LCD, and the second is the flash sync button on the rear of the camera. Both should have a little red film symbol on them. Press them both and hold them, and the film should begin to rewind.

The camera shouldn't be doing this, assuming you're using 36 exposure (or 24 exposure) film. You may want to set a custom function to prevent automatic rewind -- you would have to rewind the film yourself by pressing the rewind button.

To do this:
1. Under the palm grip, press the 'CF' (custom function) button.
2. Use the main dial to select 'F1' in the LCD. It should show a '0' below the 'F1'.
3. Press the 'CF' button to change the '0' to a '1'.
4. Press the shutter button half way to save the change and exit the custom function setting mode.

If you want to stop the rewind with the film leader still exposed (film doesn't rewind entirely into the cannister), use the same steps but set custom function 'F2' to a value of '1'.

The Err usually appears because the camera is in one of the auto shooting modes and the lens is either not mounted or is mounted, but is not set to the smallest aperture setting (ie 22)

It could be that your camera doesn't know it's rewound the film already. With the camera turned on, push and hold BOTH manual rewind buttons simultaneously - one near the release button ( +/- ) and the other toward the front of the camera at the lens release button. Try the release button again.

You have to reset the rewind counter by pushing the two buttons simultaneously - one on the side of the lens mount, the other by the release button - red, cassette symbols. This tells the camera there's no film in it.

First check the batteries. Are they fully charged? If you still have the same problem, try this:

Is the film (that which did not rewind fully) still in the camera? If so, open the film chamber door once in a dark room and close it again. Try to rewind the film again. This could possibly be the result of the film getting stuck somewhere, preventing the camera from rewinding it.
