something has malfunctioned in the lens motor itself, unfortunately this means that your going to have to take the camera into a repair shop or send it back to canon for repair.
Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.
There is two ways to attempt to fix this, the first! get a can of compressed air attach included straw, give two or three good blasts in the crevice "between camera body and lens housing" and at the same time press power. If that does not work take the palm of your hand and gently hit around the lens housing and pressing power as you do so in an effort to get the lens to respond, and keep in mind there is risk in doing this, small camera's are more successful using this method. The only other option is a camera technician.
So when its stuck you just push on the lens.
i know it sounds crazy, and it'll sound like you cracked it, but it really does unjam your camera!
try it!
