Servicing of a Polarwind dehumidifier - noticed not as efficient - 8 years old

If efficiency is down make sure that the the coils are clean and free of any and all debris, dirt, etc. Locate unit where it can "breathe" properly. If no improvement you may have lost some refrigerant over the years. If access to ammeter check for current draw. If it is lower that specs it is because the unit is not working as hard due to less refrigerant in system.

It runs but never water in tank

If it is reasonably clean inside and the room temperature is in the 70's you probably have lost some refrigerant gas or the compressor has lost some capacity. Look in side to be sure the coil is not frozen and the compressor is actually operating.

Good Luck,
Gil

On a dehumidifer, you set the relative humidity, not temperature. Normally the humidity should be set within 40 to 60 percent humidity.

It is not extracting water, though it is running. The coil ices up almost immediately. Is the compressor dead?

if the temp of the area it is in is not too cold and the coils and filters are clean, then it may have deleloped a leak and lost some of the refrigerant charge. i would clean coils and filters first.

The coils on my dehumidifier are frosting over.

Are the coils clean? If it has a filter is it clean? If yes to both, it has lost (leaked) refrigerant and it's time to buy a new dehumidifier. If the leak can be found it probably wouldn't be repairable and would cost more to fix than it's worth.

4 year old dehumidifier does not extract water

It may have lost its charge of refrigerant. Check the warranty for sealed system, or if it is just the compressor which is covered. There are coils above the bucket area. Check for possible frost on only part of the coil. It is a sign that it has a leak at some point and has lost its refrigerant charge. If it lost all the gas there will be no frost nor condensation on the coils. Four years old and $75 bucks, its your choice.

Fan

Depending on the ambient temp/humidity and how its set it could definitely run continually. If you don't hear it it's possible the blade is broken or just stuck.
