I have a RCA Opal M4204-A and its been my trusty companion since 2008. I recently moved songs from it to my new laptop and disconnected it. When I went back to my car all the files were empty however when I checked in the settings drop down it showed that the data was still there! However the music, picture, video, audiobook and favorites now say [empty]. When I hook it back up to my computer the only files that show are FMrecorder, playlist and voicerecorder. When I checked for hidden files I have a bunch DAT and IDX files. So the MP3 music, videos and pictures are all still on the MP3 player however the Directory is empty and it won't show on my computer.

I looked to see if I did that before I posted. I moved 3 albums. Its a click and drag type. If done it countless times. The data is still on the Opal MP3 player however it looks like the directories are gone so even my computer can't see the data...just that data is there. On my laptop I created new folders with the correct names as to what shows on the MP3 player menu list...and moved music click and drag and the MP3 player put it in the correct folder and I can access it and it works. There is no firmware or anything that tells the MP3 player how to view the data that I moved. I moved just 3 albums from within the data not the file containing the data. I think what may have happened is that I unplugged the MP3 player without first telling the laptop to safely disconnect it...and something happend. SO how do I delete or clear everything in the MP3 player. I only have 2MB's of free space because I can't access the data.

Most good MP3 players have 2 modes of connecting to the computer to move files. MTP and MSC, These modes can put music in the same folder but if in one mode you can not see the files you put there from the other mode.

MSC stands for Mass Storage Class. When your player is in this mode, the computer will see it the same way it would see a Thumb drive or flash drive, as a removable disk. It will assign the first available drive letter to your device, as well as one for the memory card (if it uses one and it is installed). This is probably the more popular of the 2 modes, and is a more "open source" type of standard. Most computers detect the player in this mode without a problem very well and right away.
MTP stands for Media Transfer Protocol. It is a Microsoft standard and is Microsoft's solution to connecting MP3 players and cameras to a w*ndow based Computer. MTP mode must be used in order to transfer ANY Digital Rights Management (DRM) protected content. MP3's downloaded form services like Rhapsody and Napster will only function in this MTP mode.
NOTE: Any songs added to your player in MSC mode will not be available in MTP mode and vise-a-versa. In other words You can't see the files added in the other mode and you can not play them. You know you have some files on your player and can not find them now, you may have to change modes so they are available.
Some players in the SanDisk line up use Instead, an "Auto Detect" function that is suppose to Automaticly use MTP mode. If MTP mode does not work for any reason, it should default to MSC mode.

To use MSC or MTP modes go to your players settings.

These settings will vary based on player model and you might have to refer to your users Manual. Check their web site for a download in PDF form. See my tip posted here, MP3 player problems. For more info. Hope this helps Fix ya up.

Use MS media player and format the player. Be sure the settings are set for MTP on the player, connect to your computer, open MS media player and format the device. That should work.

You must have moved a file from the player that you shouldn't have. If you know where on the MP3 you moved the files from and where it is now on your laptop you can try COPYING the files back to the mp3 player. If you didn't use the software for the Opal it won't work properly, ie give you the problem you have now. These players require their own software and the files have to be in the correct director in order for them to read. It sounds like you have lost a required file, most likely moved it to the laptop by mistake. It would have been a hidden file most likely.

IDX files are the index and DAT is the data. Without the right files it can't access or "see" them.

Since it is difficult for me to know how /in what way it is corrupted you probably are going to have to reformat it.

Reset the player by using a non-metal pointed object and pressing the Reset button on the back of the player

If the Reset does not work, then you can reformat the player.

NOTE ! Formatting the player will erase all files on the player so make sure to back up the contents of the player BEFORE reformatting.

    To reformat:

Connect the mp3 player to your computer.

Right click the device on My Computer.

Select the format command (FULL) to reformat the internal memory of the device.

Once reformat is complete, get the latest firmware file for your player

Go here for instructions and link for downloading the firmware http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answ...

How to i play videos on a RCA M4204

Log onto the RCA website and download the RCA SMV Video Converter. The Opal only plays videos that are in one specific format. This converter will put your videos into that exact format (see Resources below).
Install the RCA SMV Video Converter once you have downloaded the software.
Open the RCA SMV Video Converter software to begin putting videos onto your RCA Opal.
Connect the RCA Opal to your computer using the USB chord that came with the device.
Wait until the RCA SMV Video Converter software reads that the device has been connected. You will know this when the bottom of the software screen reads “Player Detected: Opal 1GB 2GB.”
Select the “Browse” option to find any videos that are on your computer which you wish to add to the RCA Opal.
Click the box next to “Transfer output files to OPAL 1GB 2GB after conversion is complete” after you have selected all of the videos which you wish to convert. This will automatically add the videos to your RCA Opal after they have been converted.
Click the “Convert” box after you have selected all of the videos. The videos will automatically begin to convert to the correct format. Once they have been converted, your videos will automatically upload to your RCA Opal.

My rca opal 4gb will not add more than 39 songs

hi teddy,

first try to format your player, if it has an option to do that. secondly ensure that the bit rates of the music files are in following ranges: mp3: 32-320kbps & WMA: 48-192kbps. and if u have uploaded pictures (.jpg) files into it then ensure hat they are not very high in number bcoz it can support upto 2000 items only including music and video and picture files.

try these.. hope they will help..
