ERROR 20 SYSTEM of SONY VO9800 is Mechanical Error. Distinguished by the suberror code. When Error 20 "SYSTEM ERROR" appears, a suberror code is displayed at the lower right corner on the monitor. Provide suberror code by the reply in order to diagnose the problem and to provide you the guidelines to fix the problem.
Remove the bottom cover and flip the circuit board out of the way.
Check to see that the capstan drive belt is not loose or broken.
Also, open the top cover and check the drive belt for the cassette transport.

From what i've read an Error-20 on a Sony BSP deck is a tape transport problem. Someone with the same error code (on a BSP model) said the actual tape loading mechanism was bad and they had to replace the hardware inside the machine that loads and ejects the cassette.

Error 90 is a communication error between the SY board and the KY board. Possible loose cable or bad electrolytic capacitor(s).

Error 20: Cassette down loading motor failure after 4 secs. Cassette tray either out of alignment or likely bent. Check for a loading belt, check gears. Often difficult to sort out cause. I just replaced the entire tray assembly in my BVW-75 deck. It was easier.
