You connected your blue alpine wire (power antenna) to your blue wire (amplifier remote on) on the BMW harness adapter. You need to undo this, amputate your blue alpine wire (because your E36 has no power antenna) and connect the alpine blue wire with white stripe (remote power) to your blue wire on the harness adapter.
When you switch source from the radio, alpine is shutting off your amplifier through the connected power antenna wire. Since you're not listening to the radio anymore, it sees no reason why it should give it power.

Most newer car receivers have a feature named something like "level balancing" in which you can adjust the relative loudness of each input (Tuner, CD, AUX, IPOD). Check you owner's manual for a similar function.
Also, are you or can you turn the level of the ipod itself up a bit?

The hard drive must be formatted in FAT 16 or 32 for the Alpine to recognise its there. It came pre-formatted in NTFS.This is an easy fix once you know the problem. Just save your data/music onto another drive. Then use a program like easeus partition master (free download) to reformat the external drive in FAT32. Move your music/data back onto the drive and the Alpine will now see the drive and all your music. As a matter of interest some people say you cant format a drive bigger than 32Gb in FAT32, but I had no problem with the above method on a seagate 500Gb drive. Also apparently some head units cant deliver enough power to spin up an external usb powered drive, but again I had no problems with the above combination

I have a similar problem. The original Alpine USB cable fell apart on me and I began receiving an error message. "No, biggie," I thought. "I have plenty of iPod USB cables." But I get an error message with each one, as well as an error message with every iPod I've tried. Apparently the IDA-X100 will only read iPods if you use an original Alpine USB cable.

Hi, I just had the same problem, I fixed it but I don't really know who... First I tried to unmount the faceplate but I haven't succesfully unmount it (the turn button can't be unmount). The I realized that the push and turn button had less rotation than usual so I push and try to rotate it strongly and it move to a normal position. Finally, due to the unmount try, the faceplate doesn't eject as well as before (I need to pull it to eject but everything looks ok since yesterday. Sorry for my poor english, hope that would be helpful for you
