I bought a DVD player from Thomson. We live in the Oman, the Middle East, but we are originally from the US (working in international schools). the DVD player is region coded. We have just bought a pile of US DVD's, and the player just says 'wrong region'. I asked the sales people in the store about this and they gave me code to put in. It didn't work, at the time I put it in there is a little hand on the top left of the screen showing that this doesn't work. I looked online to find solutions and they gave me the same code. However, I still can not type it in, it doesn't seem to accept any input. Wondering if you can help me.

    Hi,
Thanks for responding. This is a Thomson DPL 906 VD player. On the box is some more numbers: ETO136888, PC:A and on a separate label: 1542E.

I don't find any information on firmware or system information. It is a region 2 DVD player (bought in Oman).

  • Anonymous Apr 26, 2011

Also, the store did some research and gave me some instructions and a code: the code is 26862200. When I looked online and searched I found the same code (it might have been on your website somewhere). However, after I see the "no disk" on the player and I try to put in the number It shows me the hand. There must be another thing I need to do to input the code (if it is the right one). Thanks.

  • Anonymous Apr 27, 2011

Nothing is working, I tried many different ways, each time powering on and off. Also the 16719 combination which seemed to come back for a few different models.

The hand always comes on immediately, when punching in the first number. It comes on to just about every button on the remote, except for a few whose functions are necessary (switching mode, selecting setup menus, etc), except for the previous and next buttons. I tried those codes after that but got the hand again immediately.

    Sorry, no success so far.

    Thanks for your persistence.

  • Anonymous Apr 27, 2011

Yes, I' had the same thought and did try the codes completely, but no success.

  • Anonymous Apr 27, 2011

Hi, I've tried this over and over again but it is not working. Exactly the way it is described here. Any ideas?

  • Anonymous Apr 27, 2011

Yes, I'll have to take it back. It is the DPL906VD player, it's written on the box and on the player itself. It's a surround sound system, does that matter? They looked up codes too and came up with the same one (26862200). Didn't work. That's when I started looking online and decided to contact you guys.

Thanks, if any more suggestions, let me know.

  • Anonymous Apr 28, 2011

Yes, still need help, no solution yet. Another expert started offering advice, and yes, I didn't ask for that, now a third one did. Let me know if you have more information.
    Thanks.

  • Anonymous Apr 28, 2011

Well, I wrote that I still don't have a solution. Not sure what to do next. The link that you gave me does not list my DVD player either. I will post something on that forum soon, but need to go for the day soon. Let me know if you have any more ideas. Thanks.

  • Anonymous Apr 28, 2011

Thanks, I will check for your input tonight. (I'm in the Middle East where my wife teaches in an international school, time is almost 9AM).

  • Anonymous Apr 29, 2011

The remote is a Thomson DVD Video remote (front, imprinted in the plastic), it has a label stuck on it on the backside that says Thomson, DPL906VD, Date Code: September 2005.
On the bottom right under the battery compartment: Made in China. On the inside cover of the battery compartment there is a label glued on that says: Made in China, Date: 05-09-27, and >ABS< in the plastic. Nothing more, the battery compartment has info on the batteries, plastified in the remote body: Maxellalkaline AAA LR03(s)XL2PX 1.5V. No other information anywhere.

The remote was exchanged after I bought the player since the other one was damaged when I got it and didn't work. They brought it in from another store in the capital. It looked identical. You may have a point, since it was not the original remote.

The box the player came in seemed to be the original box with all of the Thomson info on it.

    Hope this helps. Thanks again.

Hi, Just wondering if I should go ahead and ask for a refund, since no one has been able to help me. Are you still working on this? I do appreciate your persistence. However, without a solution I think I might as well get my money back. What do you think?

  • Anonymous May 05, 2011

Hi, sorry for the late response. I just flew 30 hrs (from the Middle East to US). I'll have to wait until I'm back home to try this. Sounds great. Don't worry yet about refunds, I have 30 days.

Will let you know next week.

    Thanks a lot.

Not sure if my last reply went through, so here it is again:

I'm back. I tried the 789 ENTER 0 approach but it's not working. I'm not sure what you mean with the password reset being 4x STOP. I don't see that anywhere in my instruction book. I'm not sure if that is the right assessment.
Let me now if you have any more ideas.
    Thanks,

Hi.

What is the make and model number of the DVD player please?

  • Lee Hodgson
    Lee Hodgson Apr 27, 2011

    Hi.

The code that you posted is correct for region free. Did they tell you just what to do?
    1. Switch on the player in DVD/CD mode without disc. The player starts with "Reading disc"
    2. Wait for the "no disk" on the screen.
    3. With the remote control (still in DVD/CD mode), type the following code: 26862200 and then the region code (1, 2, ... or 6), or 0 for region free.
    4. The reader now shows "Reading".
    5. Insert your disc and start playing.

    That should be it.

  • Lee Hodgson
    Lee Hodgson Apr 27, 2011

It sounds to me like this could not be the correct model DVD player. If you unable to make the player region free then I suggest that you either contact Thompson themselves or take the DVD player back to the store you purchased it from and ask them if they can swap the player to one that is region free.
I am unable to find any other code to put into the DVD player to unlock it.

Hi -
Most Thomson players are 'hackable', i.e. can be converted to region-free. The hand symbol suggests you are entering the correct code, but that the player may have been 'chipped' or has a different firmware version which disables the unlock method that works on other players of the same model or from other regions.
It's commonly US / Region 1 players that have the region code disabled. As you can't play US DVDs, this isn't a region 1 default player, so this improves the chances it can be unlocked.
I can't really tell you any more as you didn't include the model number of your DVD player. It would also help to know which region the player is locked to and the firmware version of the player - if you can find it. The model number should be on a label the back of the player somewhere and the firmware version may be available in the on-screen menu, under the heading "System Information" or something similar.
Please reply to me with this information by clicking on "Add a Comment" below your question and I'll see what can be done with regard to unlocking your player.
Regards, BElectric.

Sorry for the delay. I can't find a specific known hack for this model, but that doesn't mean there isn't one. The 26862200 code you've been given is for the DPL900VD and DPL910VD. I wouldn't expect this to work as the head-units for both of these models are totally different to the DPL906VD.

I'd suggest trying hacks from other Thomson DPL-9XXVD models, such as the 909 and the 907. Please try the methods listed below then let me know if you are still unable to unlock the player. You wont damage the player - if it's not the right hack for the player, it simply wont work.

Before trying each method, power the player off then switch on again and make sure the TV is on and set to the DVD input. You may need the display from the DVD player on the TV screen to change the region code.

Region hack for DPL909VD (and others)

    1. Power on

2.Remove any disc, then close the disc tray

    3. Wait for the NO DISC message to appear

    4. Hold the SELECT button on the front of the player for about 5 seconds

If this works, REGION SELECT will appear on the display

5.Use the VOLUME +/- buttons on the front of the player to set the region code from 0 to 6 (0 is region free)

If nothing happens after holding SELECT, again see if the volume buttons have any effect. Also try the same method with the disc tray open. Power off between attempts.

Region hack for DPL 907 VD

    1. Power on

    2. Open the disc tray

    3. Key 123456 on the remote control

    4. Use the VOLUME +/- buttons on the front of the player to set the region code

If nothing happens after keying 123456, see if the volume buttons have any effect. Also try the same method with the disc tray closed after the "no disc" message appears. Power off between attempts.

Please try these two hacks with both the tray open and closed then get back to me. It would be useful to know the following:

    1. Does the player respond or do anything unusual when you try either of the above hacks?

    2. When you tried entering the 26862200 code, does the hand symbol appear when you press the first number of the code, i.e. the 2 - or after entering the entire code?

Additionally, there are numerous other hacks for Thomson DPL-9XX-VD players here:

Click on each model number to see the hack for each player. Please note the instructions are sometimes poorly written and may need some deciphering or you need to read the additional comments to get the full instructions.

You're welcome to try them, but I think only the 909 and 907 methods are likely to work with the 909 method being the most likely. If nothing works, I'll see if I can find a hack for a 'clone' of this model, if there is one. Often one DVD player is sold by several manufacturers with a different badge or a slightly different casing or remote, but all of the internals are the same.

Hope this helps. I'll wait to hear back from you.

    Regards,

    BElectric

OK. You'll have to give me some time to look into this - I will get back to you Iater today. It's possible that it can't be unlocked, but that seems a little odd, as almost every other Thomson player seems to be unlockable.

Also, thinking about it a little more, I don't think the hand icon is a warning that it can't be unlocked. It simply means an invalid key has been pressed in relation to the available functions or current mode of the player, so don't be put off continuing with an unlock method by the appearance of the hand symbol.

Have you been stopping when the hand appears or have you continued regardless?

Please note: You will need to click on "View More Comments" in the light-blue bar below this message to see future replies from me. This wont appear until next time I post a message to you.

Do you still need help with this?

My records show you requested assistance from another expert, but it's possible this was due to a system error. If you would still like me to continue looking for a solution, please let me know.

No problem - I'm back on the case. If you get a working hack from someone else in the meantime, please let me know and I'll stop looking.

It may take a little while to find the true identity of this player, but I will get back to you today.

  • DILLIGAF
    DILLIGAF Apr 28, 2011

Sorry, no luck so far. I need a little bit more information from you - can you have a look on the remote -particularly the back and inside the battery compartment - for a model number for the remote control. Basically any sets of numbers you can find on the remote would be a great help.

The head-unit of this system is a bit of an oddity. It doesn't appear to be a Thomson unit at all despite having their badge on the front. This isn't uncommon though. The remote model number will help me to find its true identity.

Thomson usually use the same remote for several models but the remote for the 906 does not match the remotes of any other DPL9XXVD models. It may be an RCA unit but I can't match the remote to any RCA units at the moment either. Many RCA units were made by Thomson anyway.

Additionally, the manual for this model has a GB symbol and a Thomson UK support phone number on it but it doesn't appear to have been sold in the UK at all. If it was, it certainly wasn't widely sold.

This player is a bit of a mystery all round! Perseverance is the name of the game, but I've got a deerstalker on and my pipe is lit . . .

  • DILLIGAF
    DILLIGAF May 03, 2011

Sorry, it's been a long holiday weekend here and I was waiting on a reply.

The honest answer here is there doesn't seem to be any known method of unlocking this player. Unlock codes are mostly dependent on end-users hacking the player. Sometimes they're leaked by manufacturers / service centres, or they respond to hacks from other units with the same or similar hardware and/or firmware. This isn't a common model and the less common they are, the less likely it is that someone has hacked it, or that any hack is known.

I haven't found anything to suggest this is anything other than a Thomson head-unit and there isn't anything on the head-unit or remote I can use to find clones. The remote and firmware versions are often the best references but I can't find any match for the remote and the firmware version is unknown. It's unusual not to find a model number on a remote control so that was a dead-end. At the moment I'm limited to visually inspecting other players and remotes from Thomson associated brands and there are far too many of those for this to be a realistic option.

Obviously, no-one else has been able to find the answer, but I do have a couple more avenues to try, although they are long-shots. I'd suggest you give me until the end of tomorrow to explore these before requesting a refund as they're not quick checks.

FixYa has a satisfaction guaranteed policy. If there is no solution to your problem, you are entitled to a refund and one will be given without delay if you request it.

Your call. I wont be offended if you'd prefer a refund and I'll still let you know should I find an answer.

  • DILLIGAF
    DILLIGAF May 03, 2011

Hold fire on that refund - I think I just found the obscure link I was looking for, but I need to investigate a little further before I come to any conclusions. I will get back to you later today.

  • DILLIGAF
    DILLIGAF May 03, 2011

OK - your player is essentially (and definitely!) a Philips unit. I've identified it from the highly unusual method for resetting the parental control password, i.e. press STOP four times. Whether it's actually Philips using Thomson hardware/software or Thomson using Philips isn't really important, but I'll try to find out.

I've compared the menu screens from your Thomson with one Philips unit that uses the same parental control reset method and got an astonishingly close match, but not identical . . . yet! This shows they are using similar software/firmware and CPU. The unit I compared with is only a DVD player (DVP-XXX range), so I probably need to compare yours with the Philips Home Theater (HTS-XXXX) range.

I'm now 99% certain this player can be unlocked using a hack from either the Philips DVP or HTS range and most of these can be made region-free. I simply need to find an identical - or the closest - match.

While I continue comparing, you can try the unlock for the DVP-642 that I've looked at. I don't think this is the right one, but it's used on several Philips units so is worth trying:

    1. Switch the TV on and set it for the DVD player input

    2. Switch the DVD player off (standby) then on again

    3. Open the disc tray

    4. Key 7 8 9 ENTER 0 on the Thomson remote

If a 0 appears on the TV screen bottom-center or bottom left, it's unlocked. If so . . .

    5. Close the disc tray

    6. Switch the player off (standby) then on again (This is just to reboot the system/firmware)

    7. Test a disc from a previously locked region.

Stick with me on this. It might take a few attempts with different hacks but I'm almost certain it can be done. I'll update you again when I've compared with some more Philips units and found a match.

  • DILLIGAF
    DILLIGAF May 05, 2011

Thanks. We're definitely on the right track now. The only slight problem is the huge amount of Philips units to compare with. However, there aren't may which use the 4x STOP to reset the password, so the unlock code I wrote in my previous message may actually prove to be the one.

I'm still checking Philips models, but it's quite painstaking, so I appreciate your patience and giving me a little time to crack this one. I'm confident of getting a result. By strange coincidence, I figured out a way to unlock another Thomson DVD player yesterday for which there was previously no known hack. Unfortunately, the method I used for figuring that one out wont work for yours.

My husband has just fitted a new dvd player in our 2003 Discovery 2,But it is saying invalid region. He bought the dvd from Ebay & I was sent from the USA.Do we need some sort of reset code??

DVD players designed for the US are set for Region 1 and cannot be used with DVD's that are from other regions such as Great Britain and most of Europe which use Region 2 DVD's . What you need is a "Region Free" player which plays all regions or a player that plays your specific region. We live in the US but watch many British DVD series so use.a Region Free player as they are Region 2 and we are in Region 1.

maybe you can return the player or at least get some sort of credit for it towards the correct region player. If you are unsure of your region, just Google it.
