Win XP, Intel Quad 4 with G31T-M motherboard. The software issued with this computer doesn't load sound. I also get the failure in the loading. Yet when I first got this computer the sound did work. I had some problems, so I redid the hard drive and now the motherboard disk seems to not laod the sound properly however the realtek icon is present on the screen.

Is this the sound device built into the motherboard or do you use another card for that?

In most cases you will need to uninstall your realtek HD audio by way of the add and remove programs. You may get a prompt about some programs may not work correctly if you remove this file do it anyway! Once removed reboot the system. Once in windows the system will let you know it found new hardware. cancel this windows and proceed to download service pack 3 for windows xp. it can be found here ---->

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=68c48dad-bc34-40be-8d85-6bb4f56f5110&displaylang=en

once downloaded install it. Then reboot when finished. Then goto this next link and get your motherboard audio drivers if you don't have the driver cd that came with your motherboard.

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

Install the realtek audio drivers again reboot and your sound should return. Let me know if this does not fix the problem as there could be somethings I have missed.

May be the file which you have download is corrupted or there may be some problem in your operating system .....this may be due to some virus attack or something like that ...

just you need to do is reinstall the operating system and then try installing if you get the same "installation failure " then the driver which you have downloaded and trying to install might not support your audio just check with it and download the compatible driver ...

thank you
bye

Does your audio device appear in the drop down of the control panel using the properties?

I wouldn't reinstall the operating system for this.
