SOURCE: Nikon D40 Memory Card Error

Hello. Make sure the write-protect switch on the SD card is in the UP (nearer to the contacts) position. Try the card in an SDHC capable reader on your computer first. Note that the SD card can only be inserted one way - make sure you're not putting it in upside-down! If the computer recognizes the presence of inserted card (whether it can read it or not), format it at FAT32. When finished, remove properly (icon in system tray) and insert into your D40 slot, WITH THE CAMERA OFF!! Turn on the D40, and if it now recognizes the SD card, FORMAT it again, in the camera. Good luck.

SOURCE: I have a Nikon D80. A few months ago, the SD card

the sd card slot is designed in such a way that when you push your card inside the slot till the deepest part and when yout leave it, it fits into the slot. if you want to take the card out you have to push the card again till the deep and leave to get it out.(just like a spring aided trap). i dont think that your slot is damaged.may be you are unsure how to insert the card in the slot. if you still find problems, please write back.

SOURCE: Camera doesn't recognize the sd card, bypasses it

1) This camera accepts SD cards up to 4 GB in capacity. Most 4 GB SD cards however, are "SDHC" types (check the label to determine which type you are using). If you are using a 4 GB "SDHC" card, it may be causing the problem, as it is not an "SD" card. Furthermore, any card greater than 4 GB is not compatible with the camera. Any SD card with a capacity less than 4 GB should work without issue.

2) Check the position of the lock or "protect" tab on the side of a compatible SD card to be sure it is in the unlock position. The camera will be unable to write to a locked or protected card.

Brand new SD card - says card is full? Nikon D40

I ran into this exact issue (64GB Sandisk SD not working with an old Nikon D40). The problem is that the camera requires FAT32 formatting, which is not supported on partitions greater than 32GB (i.e the 64GB stick). A format from the camera attempts to repartition all device space (64GB) which is incompatible.

I solved this by connecting the SD to my laptop, opening the windows disk management utility (diskmgmt.MSC), deleting all partitions on the SD (right-click, delete partition on all allocated space), the right clicking the unallocated space, add simple partition, then allocating only 32GB and using FAT32 as the format (any more and windows will only provide exFAT as an option, also not compatible with Nikon D40). Plugging that into the camera and NOT reformatting from there worked.

My sd card won't stay in place, it just pops back out.

It sounds like the latching mechanism is broken. Phone Nikon's service department at 1-800-NIKON-US (1-800-645-6687) between 9AM-8PM EST, Monday to Friday and they will be able to get you a quote on the repair.

When I put into my camers Nikon D40 IT SAYS IT IS LOCKED?

I sure hope you mean an SD or an SDHC card, since the D40 doesn't take CF cards.

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.
