The D40x won't deface your pictures by scrawling a string of digits across them. However, the date and time (and a lot more) are saved with each picture in what's called the EXIF data. You can see this data in just about any photo viewing/cataloging program, such as Nikon ViewNX2.
Any photo printing program should be able to print some of this data, either on the image itself, in the margins, or on the back, depending on the printer. If you're printing directly from the camera, look at the instructions in the "Printing Photographs" section of the manual (page 57 in my copy), particularly the paragraph bulleted "Time stamp."
