Open the chuck wide open. In the center is a retaining screw, they usually have left hand threads. Remove the screw. Take an allen wrench1/4" to 3/8" in size and fasten the short side tightly in the chuck. The chucks are usually right hand thread, so take a small hammer and strike the allen wrench to turn the chuck to the left to loosen it. Once you have the chuck off, verify the thread size of the drill motor shaft, then go to McMaster-Carr and choose the one you need.

I asked about a "keyless" chuck. Plus, there is no retaining screw inside the chuck. I have removed chucks before, but this one is puzzling.

I have removed numerous "keyless" chucks. Every one had a retaining screw in the center?
I will see what I can find out for you, maybe yours is different. Be back soon.

I found a parts list and drawing here -http://servicenet.dewalt.com/Products/De...
You are correct it does not show a retaining screw. It does show that it has 1/2x20 threads, so you should be able to lock the allen wrench in as described previously and tap it sharply with a hammer in the reverse direction to break loose the chuck.
    Good Luck.

We are the manufacturer for keyless drill chuck in China.
10mm and 13mm keyless chuck available.
Regarding to keyless chucks, two sleeves, you could move the chuck from Dewalt tool by turning the rare sleeve of keyless chuck. and replace a new keyless chuck.
Please have a try.

How do I open the chuck or drill mouth to replace the drill present in my DeWalt Heavy-Duty 3/8? Keyless Chuck Drill?

Hi Tony,

To remove the bit with a keyless chuck, just turn the chuck to the right (looking from the handle to the front) to open the jaws. To put in another bit, tighten the chuck to the left to close. You have to use both hands. You will see where the ridged portion of the chuck is in two sections. Hold on to the back section with your left hand to keep it from turning while you turn the front section with your right hand.

A lot of the time I just push the button to put the drill in reverse, hold on the front section of the chuck and turn it on. It will loosen by itself. Then when you put the new bit in, put it in forward and hold on to the chuck and press the switch. The bit will be in nice and tight.

Good luck.

Cannot get the chuck to release the bit it is a dewalt and yes I am in reverse

On some of the DeWalt drills I have owned with keyless chucks, the chuck has a locking mechanism.
You have to grip the chuck and slide the outer sleeve forward to release the lock, then you can tighten or loosen the chuck.

I have a dc 759 it has a plastic cover over the keyless chuck ....it is stripped out.....can i just replace the plastic cover? .... if so how and where can i get one

If the drill is not too old, I would take it to your nearest factory dewalt repair shop. they have a good warranty on their items. If it is older you probably need to replace the chuck itself. You need to remove the plastic to get the chuck open and then there is a screw down inside the chuck that needs removed. The chuck should come right off and just reverse the process to install the new one.

How can I disassemble a Dewalt keyless cordless drill chuck? I mean take it apart, not just remove it.

depending on the chuck it would take special fixtures to press apart, and unless you are very good with tools you would damage it beyond repair. I have never taken a keyless apart and tried to repair and put together, I have on the other hand done the same with the keyed chucks.

Drill chuck swap

1. Turn the screw clockwise to take it out.
2. Then you needs 3/8 allen key & insert the short side of the allen key & tighten the chuck.
3. hold the drill at the edge of the table & wack the allen key
counter clockwise & do it again as needed.
4. dewalt keyless chuck will fit but you might add a washer to insure the chuck is not rubbing the clutch collar.
5. putting it back together the other way.
