Remote only closes the garage door, will not open it

When I leave in the morning, I use the wall mount to open the door and the remote to close it when I leave. When I come home, the remote will not open the door. I have an outside keypad that will not open the door (I haven't tried to close it with the outside keypad. The wall mount keypad in the garage opens and closes the door. What is wrong with the remote and outside keypad? They both stopped working within a day or two of each other and I have changed the batteries. Any suggestions? The last time the outside keypad stopped working, I just bought a new one. This one is only 3 years old. Any suggestions?

Anytime a door opens and/or closes randomly or doesn’t work consistently I look for a smashed wire between the motor unit and the wall button.

If the wire is smashed the insulation becomes so thin that power will leak thru the insulation and activate the door or interfere with the remote signal.

Loosen the staples with a small screwdriver and slide the wire about ½ inch to move any areas of thin insulation away from the staples.

The second thing would be a bad wall button or a remote with a sticking button.
Or a remote in someone’s purse that gets the button pushed by other stuff in the purse.

The test is to disconnect the push button wires at the power unit. If the self operation / interference stops you have located the problem. If you reconnect the wires and disconnect the wire at the wall button this will tell you if the problem is the wire or the button.

In your case the expansion of the wall in the afternoon may be enough to cause pressure on the wire to increase the problem – works in the morning but not the afternoon.

Also after you change the batteries you need to reprogram the remotes.

HOPE THIS HELPS

I have a Sears Model 139.53879 (3-Function Remote Control) garage door opener. It's about 12 years old. The remote controls open the door fine but the remotes do not close the door; it has to be closed...

Sounds like a problem with the safety photocells, to confirm locate the where the safety input is on the opener and bridge out the terminals ( not the supply voltage terminals) if the door then closes the photocells are the problem.

Wall mount button LED is flashing, remotes won't work, door won't close unless the wall mount button is held down until the door is fully closed

Sounds like you have a couple problems. First of all press and hold the button on the wall control that has a lock icon for 3 seconds and release. This should take care of the flashing LED and the remotes will now work. Having to hold the button on the wall control until the door is closed is usually a problem with the door sensors. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each is lit and not flickering.

My remote intermittenly opens/closes the garage door

You can find a free manual for your door opener at manualsonline .com You might want to look at how to program it and change the unit to a different frequency. You can sometimes get better response and eliminate interference. Also make sure your battery contacts in the remote are clean.

If the small light in your wall control is blinking it is in the lock mode. Press and hold for 3 seconds the button with the icon of a lock. This will toggle the lock function off.

Liftmaster 971LM opens but won't close correctly

Check the wiring going to the sensors to make sure it is not broken or disconnected. You have a problem with the sensors themselves or the logic board. Unfortunately the only way to be sure is to replace.

Chamberlain Liftmaster Pro. Garage door Problems closing

The sensor eye - or more likely, the other end, the sensor light - probably got knocked out of alignment. The eye should have an LED on it - possibly one that glows green when it's ready to close or red when it's obstructed or out of alignment. Try adjusting the light until the LED on the receiver glows green.
