My R1871 microwave shuts off in 59 second increments.  This must be the problem, but don't know how to fix technically.  What part do I order, and is it easy to fix myself?

The timer on my Sharp R-1870 shuts off at 59 seconds. This is the third Sharp Convection/Microwave I have owned over the past 20 years. They have all "died" with this problem.

This is a problem in one of the damper-related components, most likely the switch, but it may also be the motor or the damper door.

The damper is a door inside that opens or closes depending on cooking mode. If the controller senses that the door is not in the right position, it will shut down the cook cycle.

Sharp models stop after 59 seconds.

See the attached sample photo for a typical damper assembly.

We have the applicable service manuals for these models and have uploaded it to our site here and here to help you.

You will need the free Adobe Reader to view or print it.

The best place to order Sharp parts is Tritronics.

If you only need a switch, you can order one from us for $5 postpaid.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Sharp microwave r1870 only runs for 59 seconds

If it consistently runs for exactly 59 seconds, and shuts off, it's probably the control panel.

If it runs approximately that length of time, you might have a defective thermal protector on the magnetron, or the magnetron is running too warm for some reason.

Sharp micro counts down 59 seconds and stops

It seems this has been happening over the last few years. I am a retired appliance tech. My 1870 also started the 59 second routine, Also in a motor home. Pure logic. Had to be the board. New board same results. So now I need to run down a parts manual and possibly service manual, and get the damper switch and motor refered to in earlier posts. Changing out the board was fairly simple. Dropping the unit to change out the other components sounds like it will be a tad bit more difficult.

My sharp will only run for 59 seconds and then shuts off. It will heat up what ever you are heating but shuts off after 59 secounds no matter how many minutes you program into it.Is there a simple solution...

Yes the timer has the problem, now a day it is built in on microcontroller if your microwave is digital control. The only you can do is send it to nearest service center in your area where they have that parts.
I do hope my advice help you.

No matter what time i put in it cuts off in 60 seconds on a sharp

This sounds like a bad damper switch or motor. Double check the shut off time....... see if it's actually 59 seconds..
When you unplug the unit from the wall for 2 minutes then plug it bad in, you should be able to faintly hear a motor run for a few seconds. This is the damper motor running. This will verify that the motor is operating.....
Also, check the thermistor.

59 Second shut off
