Often the updates require other updates to be installed beforehand. It may also be your anti-malware solution is blocking the update from properly installing.

The easiest thing to do first, is to attempt to install the Windows updates one by one.

1. Go to your Control Panel, and open Windows Update.
2. There may be a blue link underneath the listed updates, stating that MS can look for other updates as well. DO THIS, then come back
3. Click on Optional Updates, and DESELECT all of them
4. Click on Important Updates, and DESELECT all of them
5. In Important Updates, click and choose to install the LARGEST file. This might be a .NET framework component.
6. Afterwards, and after rebooting the PC, continue with the other updates, one by one, until you find the update that doesn't install.
7. Skip that update and proceed with installing the rest of them
8. Go to Optional Updates, and install them as well in the same fashion.

Problem with Windows 8.1 updates.

Windows 10 will only install if you have all the earlier updates
sometimes hundreds of updates are missed.
even if it says no upgrades and is green
always click on check for updates, service packs and versions of internet explorer will be installed, However if you dont want to see the upgrade to 10 you can always turn off auto updates and check yourself when you have the time to install them yourself.

Windows is more up to date than th one tryng to download,I need to cancel this but do not know how to find it

. First of all click the Start button to view the Start Menu. Then choose the Control Panel option.
2. The Control Panel window opens up now.
Click the System and Security link from the Control Panel window.
Important updates provide significant benefits, such as improved security and reliability. Recommended updates can address non-critical problems and help enhance your computing experience. Optional updates are not downloaded or installed automatically.

6. Important Updates can be configured in four ways:

  • Install updates automatically (recommended)
  • Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
  • Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
  • Never check for updates (not recommended)
If you choose Install updates automatically , there are additional options to schedule the update at a convenient time.

3. The System and Security section of Control Panel opens up. Here you can see the Windows Update link.
As you can see in the above screenshot there is direct links to the important Windows Update option here it self in slightly small fonts, such as Turn automatic updating on or off, Check for updates, View install updates . You may choose the required option directly from here. But we are going ahead to the dedicated Windows Updates section of the Windows 7 control panel by clicking the main Windows update link.

4. So now we are at the Windows Update section of our Window 7 Control panel. You can manually look up for any new updates by clicking the Check for updates button under the heading Check for updates for your computer fromthis window. In order to modify the Windows update option click theChange settings in the left pane.
5. Here you may change the way Windows 7 download and install updates. Configurable option include Important Updates , Recommended updates ,Who can install updates and Featured update notifications .
or if Never check for updates is selected:

How to disable automatic updates on XP windows?

To turn on Automatic Updates yourself, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
  2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them option.
    • Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you select this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. When the download is complete, you receive another message in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation.
      • Click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to download and install. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. However, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed.
      • You can choose to install the updates as soon as they are finished downloading. To do this, click the download message (or update icon), and then click Install. If you choose not to install the updates when they finish downloading, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.
    • Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them

If you select this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to automatically download updates from the Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. When the download is complete, you receive another message in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation.
      • When you want to install the downloaded update, click the message (or update icon), and then click Install to install the update.
      • If you do not want to install a downloaded update, click Details, and then click to clear the check box next to that update to decline it.
    • Notify me but don't automatically download or install them

If you select this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to search for downloads from the Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site. An Automatic Updates icon and message appear in the notification area of your taskbar when new updates are available to download or to install.
      • Click the icon or message to view the updates. If you do not want to download a selected update, click to clear the check box next to that update to decline it. Click Start Download to download the selected updates. The Automatic Updates icon remains in the notification area of your taskbar while the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status.
      • When the download is complete, you receive another message in the notification area stating that the updates are ready to install. Click the Automatic Updates icon or the message, and then click Install to install the updates.
  3. Click OK.

How do i install updates

Some updates need to be installed separately, the system restarted, and then more updates are being downloaded and installed.

You can always open the "Windows Update" from Start Menu, or alternatively open Internet Explorer and choose Tools -> Windows Update, and do what the site tells you to. You will see all the updates available and still needing to be installed, and also information if a given update needs to be installed separately.

Good luck :)

Excessive windows updates

Windows is sometimes very annoying, I believe the update configuration file is probably corrupted. You can download the SP2 manually here.
You can also change your update settings to "install updates without prompting so that" so that it will install updates in the background without disturbing you.

Regards,
Sai.
