gringing noise is never a good sign check the main bearing these are notorious for having bearings go and if it is bearing find a new machine its not worth fixing it is costs more then the machine is worth to replace
OK, this is a drive shaft issue. the gear case that the drive is connected to is malfunctioning. there may be a stripped gear or the clutch may need to be replaced.
It sound like you have a bad float switch and it is not reading the water level right.If it is filling and wont stop then a possible new water valve is in order:) The float switch is locatted under the top panel of washer
